MELBOURNE - Nov 23/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge will maintain a moist onshore wind flow over much of the east coast during the outlook period. This moist air feeds into a slow moving surface trough that extends from the northwest of the state into the Maranoa. A coastal trough and an associated S'ly wind change will move north into far southern Queensland waters on Thursday. An upper level low will develop to the southwest of the state this evening and remain slow moving into Thursday, maintaining a thundery rain band over much of the interior. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday A band of rain and thunderstorms stretches from the northwest of the state, through the central interior and into the Maranoa and Warrego district and southeast interior. Moderate to locally heavy falls are expected within this cloud band. Showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics and through the southern tropical interior. Showers and isolated thunderstorm over the Southeast Coast district, increasing to thundery rain areas south of Brisbane tonight. More isolated shower and thunderstorm activity elsewhere over central and southeast districts with thunderstorms occurring mainly inland. Mostly fine in the southwest with only isolated light showers. Light to moderate NE to NW winds over eastern districts, fresh at times near the coast. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds in the west. Forecast for Thursday A cloud band with rain and thunderstorms will continue to extend from the central interior through the Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Widespread moderate falls with some localised heavy falls are expected within the band through areas east of about Longreach to Charleville. Patchy rain and thunderstorms through the northwest of the state. Mostly fine elsewhere in the west with only isolated showers over the southern Channel Country. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the Southeast Coast district and southern Wide Bay and Burnett with some moderate falls, possibly locally heavy near the S'ly wind change. Showers and thunderstorms through the northern tropics and southern tropical interior with some moderate falls possible with storms. More isolated shower and thunderstorm activity elsewhere over the east coast. Cool maximum temperatures over much of the interior and southeast. Moderate to fresh NW to NE winds over the far southern coast ahead of a S'ly wind change extending from the south. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere over eastern districts. Moderate SW to SE winds in the far west, tending moist NW to NE elsewhere over the interior. Forecast for Friday The upper level low will begin to move towards southeastern Australia. Fine conditions are expected over the southwest. The thundery rain band will persist elsewhere over the southern and central interior with some moderate to locally heavy falls likely. Showers and thunderstorms will continue through the northwest with some moderate falls likely with thunderstorms. Scattered showers and possible isolated thunderstorms are expected in a continued moist and unstable airflow on the east tropical coast. The coastal trough will weaken over the southern Queensland coast and a ridge should then suppress activity with only showers expected. Maximum temperatures will again be below average under the thundery rain band and in the southwest of the state. Forecast for Saturday The upper level system will move southeast over southeastern Australia. The thundery rain band should therefore weaken and contract east over southeastern districts and the central interior of Queensland, most likely reaching the southeast coast by the afternoon. Some moderate falls remain likely, particularly with thunderstorms. Isolated showers are expected along the Wide Bay and central coasts ahead of the rain band. Instability should decrease over the northeast tropical coast, with more isolated shower and possible thunderstorm activity expected. Showers and thunderstorms will continue elsewhere over northern Queensland with some moderate falls likely with storms. Fine conditions are expected south and west of Longreach. Forecast for Sunday A deep ridge should develop on the east tropical coast south of Coen with only isolated showers expected. Unstable conditions will persist elsewhere over northern Queensland with showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. The upper level low will most likely contract east off the Victorian coast into the Tasman Sea. The patchy, thundery rain band over southeastern and central districts will therefore weaken further into shower and isolated thunderstorm activity and contract northeast to be north of about Richmond to Fraser Island. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The upper low will decay on Monday, though a weak surface trough should maintain some shower and thunderstorm activity through the far northwest and the central interior. This shower and thunderstorm activity should then become a little more extensive through the central and southern interior on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of a new surface trough moving into western districts. Isolated showers on the east tropical and central coasts should increase to scattered from Tuesday with possible isolated thunderstorms due to a trough moving west over the Coral Sea. Showers and possible isolated thunderstorms should occur through southeast districts, mostly inland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
