Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Nov 17/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge along the east tropical
coast of Queensland until the end of the week. A near stationary surface trough
extends from the far northwest of the state into the southeastern interior and
will weaken during today. An upper level trough over western Queensland will
move northeast into the central interior during today.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Showers and thunderstorms in the northwest, with more isolated activity
developing through the southern interior during the day, mostly east of about
Quilpie. Mostly fine conditions elsewhere over the interior with just some
patchy light rain through the central west. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
over the Peninsula district. Isolated showers and morning drizzle areas along
the east tropical and central coasts, with showers becoming more frequent over
the northeast tropical coast. Mostly fine elsewhere over the east coast with
just the chance of early morning light showers and drizzle areas. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times in the southwest and along the northeast
tropical coast. A Very High fire danger in the Central West district.
Forecast for Saturday
A new trough will move east over central Australia and most likely approach
the southwest Queensland border late in the day. Showers and thunderstorms
should become more widespread through northwestern parts of the state in the
converging NW to NE wind flow ahead of the trough. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms are also expected through the far southern interior, mostly during
the afternoon. The ridge will persist along the east Queensland coast.
Instability should increase through the tropics due to the presence of an upper
trough, with scattered showers near the east tropical coast and isolated
thunderstorms over the Peninsula district. Mostly fine conditions should occur
over remaining parts of the state, with only isolated showers over central
districts and some early morning drizzle in the Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough should move into the southwest and far southern interior
of the state. Cloud will increase across the far west of the state, with showers
and thunderstorms increasing to thundery rain at night. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms are possible over remaining parts of the interior south and west
of about Charleville. Conditions should remain fairly unstable through the
northern tropics, with showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. Isolated
showers will occur over remaining eastern districts north of Fraser Island. Fine
conditions should continue elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough should remain in the southwest of the state. A significant
upper trough will approach the southwest border at night. Cloud will therefore
thicken across the west of the state with rain areas and thunderstorms spreading
to areas west of about Normanton to Cunnamulla with some moderate falls
possible. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will most likely develop just to
the east of the rain band southwest of about Longreach to Stanthorpe. A trough
moving west over the Coral Sea will maintain unstable conditions through the
tropics with isolated showers and thunderstorms expected. Mostly fine conditions
will occur elsewhere over the state with only isolated showers and early drizzle
areas near the east coast north of Fraser Island.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The surface trough and associated band of rain and thunderstorms will move
slowly east over the interior during the outlook period, most likely reaching
the east coast by late Wednesday. The rain band will most likely extend from the
Gulf Country through central and southeast districts on Thursday, but should
contract off the southeast coast during the day depending on the movement of the
trough. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue along the east tropical
and central coasts ahead of the rain band with mostly fine conditions over the
southern central and southeast districts on Tuesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
