Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Nov 17/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge along the east tropical
coast of Queensland until the end of the week. A near stationary surface trough
extends from the far northwest of the state into the southeastern interior and
will weaken during Friday. An upper level trough over western Queensland will
move northeast into the central interior during Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Patchy rain areas, isolated showers and thunderstorms southwest of about
Mount Isa to Goondiwindi. Fine elsewhere over the interior. Showers and
thunderstorms near the northwest border. Isolated showers over the northeast
tropical coast and through the northern Peninsula, with possible late
thunderstorms near the northwest Peninsula coast. Moderate to fresh NE'ly winds
over southern and central parts, tending SE'ly south of the trough. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times along the northeast tropical
coast.
Forecast for Friday
Showers and isolated thunderstorms in the northwest with more isolated
activity developing through the far southern interior. Mostly fine conditions
elsewhere over the interior with just the chance of isolated showers and
thunderstorms through the central west. Isolated showers and drizzle areas along
the east coast, mainly in the morning and also through the Peninsula in the
onshore wind flow. Showers should become more frequent along the northeast
tropical coast. Isolated thunderstorms will most likely develop on the west
Peninsula coast at night. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at times
along the northeast tropical coast. A Very High fire danger in the Central West
district.
Forecast for Saturday
A new trough will move east over central Australia and most likely approach
the southwest Queensland border late in the day. Showers and thunderstorms
should become more widespread through northwestern parts of the state in the
converging NW to NE wind flow ahead of the trough. The ridge will persist along
the east Queensland coast. Instability should increase through the tropics due
to the presence of an upper trough, with scattered showers near the east
tropical coast and isolated thunderstorms over the Peninsula district. Mostly
fine conditions should occur over remaining parts of the state, with just the
chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far southern interior and
central districts and some early morning drizzle in the Wide Bay.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough should move into the southwest and far southern interior
of the state. Cloud will increase across the far west of the state, with showers
and thunderstorms increasing to thundery rain at night. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms are possible over remaining parts of the interior west of about
Longreach. Conditions should remain fairly unstable through the northern
tropics, with showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. Isolated showers will
occur over remaining eastern districts north of Fraser Island. Fine conditions
should continue elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough should remain in the southwest of the state whilst a
significant upper trough approaches the west of the state. Cloud will thicken
across the west of the state with rain areas and thunderstorms spreading to
areas west of about Normanton to Thargomindah with moderate falls possible.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible ahead of the main rain band over
Cape York Peninsula and through the central and southern interior. Isolated
showers about the east coast north of the Sunshine Coast with fine conditions
elsewhere.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The surface trough and associated band of rain, showers and thunderstorms
will move slowly east over the interior during the outlook period, most likely
reaching the east coast by late Wednesday. The band of rain and thunderstorms
should then contract offshore over southern areas during Thursday but is likely
to persist about the tropics and Gulf Country. Showers will continue along the
east tropical and central coasts ahead of the rain band with mostly fine
conditions over the southern central and southeast districts on Tuesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
