Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Nov 15/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high over the Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge along the east tropical
coast of Queensland until the end of the week. A surface trough in the southern
interior will move slowly northeast.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Very warm to hot conditions continuing over much of southern Queensland.
Cloud increasing in the far southwest with patchy rain and isolated
thunderstorms. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over remaining parts of
the southern interior south of about Boulia to Stanthorpe. Fine elsewhere over
southern and central Queensland. Isolated showers and thunderstorms near the
northwestern border. Mostly fine elsewhere over the tropics with only isolated
showers and drizzle areas near the east tropical coast and through the far
northern Peninsula district. Moderate to fresh NW to NE winds over the interior
and southeast coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times
along the northeast tropical coast. A Very High fire danger over the Channel
Country, North West, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central West,
Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett
districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The trough will move further east to extend from the northwest of the state
into the southeast interior. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will therefore
occur southwest of about Mount Isa to Goondiwindi, with patchy rain in the far
southwest. Showers and storms will extend east into the southeastern Darling
Downs during the day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will continue near the
northwest border. The ridge along the east coast will be maintained as a new
high moves into the Tasman Sea. Isolated showers and morning drizzle areas will
occur along the east coast north of the Sunshine Coast and through the northern
Peninsula in the onshore wind flow. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere.
Temperatures will generally remain above average over southern districts though
are not expected to be as warm as Wednesday.
Forecast for Friday
The trough will remain slow moving over the interior, though weaken late in
the day. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the northwest with
more isolated activity developing through the far southern interior. Mostly fine
conditions will occur elsewhere over the interior with just the chance of
isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms through the central west. The new
high will move east over the Tasman Sea, maintaining a firm ridge and SE to NE
winds along the east Queensland coast. Isolated showers and drizzle areas will
occur along the east coast north of about the Sunshine Coast and through the
northern Peninsula in the onshore wind flow. Isolated thunderstorms will most
likely develop on the west Peninsula coast late in the day.
Forecast for Saturday
A new trough will move east over central Australia and most likely approach
the southwest Queensland border late in the day. Showers and thunderstorms
should become more widespread through northwestern parts of the state in the
converging NW to NE wind flow ahead of the trough. The ridge will persist along
the east Queensland coast. Instability should increase through the tropics due
to the presence of an upper trough, with scattered showers near the east
tropical coast and isolated thunderstorms over the Peninsula district. Mostly
fine conditions should occur over remaining parts of the state, with just the
chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far southern interior and
central districts and some early morning drizzle in the Wide Bay.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The new surface trough and an associated band of rain, showers and
thunderstorm activity will most likely move slowly east over the interior during
the outlook period. The high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea to the
north of New Zealand, maintaining a ridge of high pressure and E to NE winds
along the east Queensland coast. Showers will continue along the east tropical
and central coasts. Mostly fine conditions should occur over the southern
central and southeast districts, with only isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms, mostly inland.
