Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Nov 7/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1023hPa] in the Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge along
the east Queensland coast over the next few days. A surface trough lies to the
southwest of the state. Moist NE to NW winds and unstable conditions extend over
far western parts of Queensland ahead of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms in the far west and over the
southern interior south of Charleville. Fine elsewhere over the interior.
Isolated showers about the Peninsula and eastern tropics, with early drizzle
areas on the northeast tropical coast. Mostly fine elsewhere over eastern
districts with only isolated light showers on the central coast and early
morning fog and mist patches in the southeast. Moderate to fresh SE winds along
the east coast, tending NE'ly over the southern coast. Hot over the Channel
Country and Warrego with moderate to fresh N'ly winds, gusty at times during the
morning. Mostly moderate NW to NE winds elsewhere over the interior. A Very High
fire danger over the Channel Country, Central West and Central Highlands and
Coalfields districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
A new surface trough will move east over central Australia and enter the far
southwest of the state in the evening. Showers and gusty thunderstorms will
therefore continue over areas west of about Normanton to Cunnamulla. Fine
conditions will continue elsewhere over the interior. The ridge of high pressure
will persist along the east Queensland coast as the high remains slow moving
over the Tasman Sea. Isolated showers will occur along the east coast and
adjacent inland north of about Gladstone, becoming more frequent over the
northeast tropical coast due to a weak trough approaching from the Coral Sea.
Mostly fine conditions are expected over the southeast with only a little early
drizzle on the Wide Bay coast and early morning fog and mist patches. Fresh and
gusty N'ly winds will result in increasing fire dangers over the Channel Country
and western Warrego.
Forecast for Thursday
The surface trough is expected to move slowly east to extend from the
northwest of the state into the southeast interior. The trough will trigger a
band of shower and thunderstorm activity extending from the western Gulf Country
through western disticts and into the western Darling Downs. The high over the
Tasman Sea will weaken. The ridge will persist along the east Queensland coast
however as a new high develops over southeastern Australia. Isolated showers and
early morning drizzle areas will occur over the east coast north of about Fraser
Island, with showers more frequent along the northeast tropical coast during the
morning. Isolated showers are also expected over the Peninsula, with possible
isolated thunderstorms developing during the afternoon.
Forecast for Friday
The new high will move east into the Tasman Sea, extending a firm ridge along
the east Queensland coast. The surface trough will extend over the interior of
the state, triggering a band of shower and thunderstorm activity from the
northwest of the state through western districts and into the southern central
highlands and southeastern interior. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms
are expected over the far northern Peninsula, with isolated showers elsewhere
over the east tropical coast in the onshore wind flow. Mostly fine conditions
should continue over the southern and central coasts with only isolated showers
expected north of Fraser Island.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The surface trough and associated isolated shower and thunderstorm activity
will continue to extend from the northwest of the state into the southeastern
interior. An upper trough will most likely move north over the southern coast on
Monday, increasing instability and possibly triggering isolated thunderstorm
activity. The high will move east across the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand,
maintaining a ridge along the east Queensland coast with isolated showers
continuing along the east tropical coast in the onshore wind flow.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
