Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Nov 5/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast. The
high will maintain the ridge as it moves eastwards over the next couple of days.
An upper level trough in western Queensland is expected to move east over the
state, contracting off the northern coast tonight and the southern coast early
on Monday.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Showers and thunderstorms through much of the interior and northern tropics.
Rain areas and thunderstorms over southern and eastern parts of the Maranoa and
Warrego district with some moderate falls possible, particularly during the
morning and early afternoon. Mostly fine over the Capricornia and through the
southern tropics and adjacent inland with only isolated showers. Fine over
southeast districts apart from showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
western Darling Downs. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast, tending
NE'ly over the southern coast. Mostly light to moderate NW to NE winds over the
interior, fresh at times over the Central West and southern interior. A Very
High fire danger over the Channel Country, Central West and Maranoa and Warrego
districts.
Forecast for Monday
Conditions will stabilise over central districts and the northeast tropics as
the upper trough contracts off the east coast and into the Coral Sea. A moist,
generally unstable airmass will persist over western Queensland and the southern
interior with isolated showers and thunderstorms expected, more widespread
through the northwest due to a converging NE to NW wind flow. The high will
become slow moving over the Tasman Sea and will maintain a ridge along the east
Queensland coast. Isolated showers will occur over the eastern tropics and the
central coast in the onshore wind flow. Fine conditions will occur over
remaining central districts and the southeast apart from some early patchy rain
over the Darling Downs and far southern central highlands.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea and will continue to
extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast. Instability will focus further
west as a trough moves into central Australia. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms will occur in the far west and through the southern interior in
the moist, converging NE to NW wind flow ahead of the trough. Isolated showers
will persist through the eastern tropics and central coast and will also occur
over the western Peninsula, with possible isolated thunderstorms near the west
coast. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere.
Forecast for Wednesday
The trough over central Australia will move into the far southwest of the
state late in the evening. Showers and thunderstorms will therefore continue
over areas west of about Normanton to Cunnamulla. The ridge of high pressure
will persist along the east Queensland coast as the high remains slow moving
over the Tasman Sea. Isolated showers will occur along the east coast and
adjacent inland north of about Yeppoon, possibly becoming scattered over the
northeast tropical coast due to a mid level trough moving onto the coast. Fine
conditions are expected elsewhere over the state in a stable airmass.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The trough is expected to move east to extend from the northwest of the state
to the southeast interior on Thursday before becoming near stationary. Showers
and thunderstorms will therefore continue through western Queensland and extend
east into the southern and southeastern interior on Thursday and Friday. Showers
will persist over much of the tropics in a moist wind flow, with possible
isolated thunderstorms, particularly on the ranges. A new high will most likely
develop in the Tasman Sea during Friday, extending a firm ridge along the east
coast and contracting shower and thunderstorm activity in the tropics to areas
north of Cairns. Mostly fine conditions should persist through remaining parts
of the state.
