MELBOURNE - Nov 3/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time The Fire Weather Warning for the Channel Country has been cancelled. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak high is located over the southern Coral Sea and is expected to decay during the rest of today. An inland trough extended from the north-west of the state to the south-east. A weak southerly wind change is slowly moving up the far southern Queensland coast, and should reach the Gladstone area late Friday evening. A high over the Great Australian Bight will continue to move slowly eastwards and enter the Tasman Sea late on Friday. An upper trough currently over Central Australia is moving east towards northwestern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Showers and thunderstorms will continue over the north-west of the state, spreading to thundery rain areas late in the day. Fine elsewhere apart from some isolated, mainly light evening showers about the southeast coast and the Scenic Rim as a moderate to fresh S to SE change develops. Moderate SE to E winds over the far northern tropics with light to moderate E to N winds over most remaining eastern districts. Forecast for Friday Showers and thunderstorms continuing over the northwest including Channel Country, which will spread to thundery rain areas late in the day. More isolated showers and storms are also possible over the Central West and northern Goldfields districts. Isolated showers south of about Gladstone chiefly near the coast, with fresh onshore winds. Isolate showers about the east coast north of Cairns. Fine conditions elsewhere. Winds will become moderate to fresh SE along much of the east coast and shift light to moderate N to NE over the inland. Forecast for Saturday The high will move across the northern reaches of the Tasman Sea while maintaining a firm ridge along the east coast. The upper trough will move over the Channel Country late in the day, and will produce scattered showers and storms over the western districts, which will spread to thundery rain in the southern interior. Showers and storms will be more isolated over the central interior. It will remain fine about much of the east coast, except for some isolated showers about the central coast, and isolated showers and thunderstorms over the far northeast, though thunderstorm activity will be mainly confined to the inland. Moderate to fresh SE winds along much of the east coast with light to moderate NE to N winds over the inland. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough will continue to move east and pass off the eastern coast late in the day. The trough will cause showers and thunderstorms over much of the northern interior, north-west and northeast tropics and southern interior. Showers and thunderstorms will be more isolated elsewhere in the west of the state. The ridge along the east coast will begin to weaken from the south so fine conditions will occur along much of the remainder of the east coast, except for some isolated showers about the central coast and the Central Highlands. Moderate to fresh SE to E winds will continue along the east tropical coast and become light to moderate SE to NE along the southern coast. Over the inland winds will be light to moderate NE to N. Forecast for Monday The upper trough will have moved off the east coast as an upper ridge builds in central Australia. Stable conditions and fine weather will return to much of western Queensland, except for the north-west with isolated showers and thunderstorms and parts of central and southern interior with very isolated showers and thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms are more likely in the southeastern interior as a weak upper thermal trough moves over the area. Showers and thunderstorms will continue about the Peninsula, but only isolated showers are now expected about the northeast tropics. Light SE to NE winds most of the state apart from moderate to fresh SE'lies along the tropical coast. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The upper ridge will move into western Queensland and stabilize weather across most of Queensland with fine conditions prevailing. A weak high in the southern Coral Sea will direct a moist onshore flow onto the northeast coast with isolated showers most days. Another upper trough may increase chances of showers and thunderstorms in the far southwest on Wednesday. This trough will move east into southern and southeastern interior on Thursday with possible isolated showers and thunderstorms. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
