Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 30/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country and
western parts of the Maranoa and Warrego district.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters from Yeppoon to Point Danger,
including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A trough currently lies from the northwest of the state to the northern New
South Wales coast. The coastal section of the trough and an associated strong
S'ly wind change will move north over southern Queensland waters today. A slow
moving high in the Great Australian Bight extends a firm ridge through
southwestern Queensland in the wake of the trough.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northwest and central interior.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the Wide Bay and Capricornia, easing to
isolated light showers from the south during the afternoon and evening. Cloudy
at first over remaining parts of the southeast with showers and possible
thunder, easing to isolated light showers in the afternoon. Mostly fine in the
northeast of the state with only isolated light showers about the coast. Patchy
high cloud over the far southwest though remaining dry. Strong and gusty S to SE
winds extending over southern coastal waters from the south and reaching Yeppoon
in the evening. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere along the east coast.
Fresh and gusty S to SE winds over the southwest of the state. Light to moderate
SE to NE winds elsewhere over the interior. A Severe fire danger over the
Channel Country and western Maranoa and Warrego districts. Very High fire danger
in the eastern Maranoa and Warrego district.
Forecast for Tuesday
The strong S'ly wind change will weaken as it moves north into central
waters. The high will remain stationary over the Great Australian Bight and
weaken slightly during the day. A firm ridge will extend along the east
Queensland coast, with isolated showers occurring about the exposed coast in the
onshore wind flow, tending scattered about the Central Coast. The inland trough
will move further west and is expected to trigger isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the northwest and central west, with more widespread activity
in the western Gulf Country. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere apart from
isolated showers over the southern tropical and central interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high in the Great Australian Bight will continue to weaken further. The
east coast ridge will relax and winds will therefore ease over central and
southern Queensland waters. The inland surface trough will persist and trigger
scattered showers and thunderstorms over northwestern Queensland, with more
isolated activity over the central west. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere
apart from isolated showers about the east coast north of about Bowen where the
onshore flow remains fresh.
Forecast for Thursday
The high in the Great Australian Bight will continue to weaken and move
slowly east. The surface trough will persist through the interior of the state
and extend to the New South Wales coast, with the coastal section of the trough
most likely moving north over southern Queensland waters during the day. This
will trigger isolated showers and possible thunderstorms about the far southeast
of the state. Isolated showers are expected over the Peninsula and northeast
tropical coast in a moist wind flow. Showers and thunderstorms should become
more widespread through northwestern Queensland due to the influence of a mid
level trough over central Australia. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms
will occur to the north of the inland trough over the central west. Fine
conditions are expected elsewhere.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high will continue to move east across southeast Australia on Friday and
into the Tasman Sea over the weekend. A mid level trough will maintain enhanced
shower and thunderstorm activity over western parts of the state on Friday,
which will most likely extend east into the central and southern interior over
the weekend. Instability should also increase over the tropics over the
weekend, with showers and thunderstorms expected. More isolated shower activity
is expected over remaining eastern districts, with possible isolated
thunderstorms, particularly over inland parts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
