Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 27/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A high east of New Zealand extends a weak ridge onto the east tropical coast
of Queensland. Another high over the Tasman Sea is moving eastwards and extends
a ridge along the southern coast of Queensland. These ridges will merge by
Friday. A weak low off the far southern coast will move north and weaken
further. A trough over the eastern interior of Queensland will drift westwards
and reach the west of the state on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the Wide Bay and Capricornia
districts extending westwards into the central and southern interior of the
state. Isolated showers with drizzle areas over the remaining south-east corner
of the state. Fine elsewhere over the state apart from isolated showers about
the far north-east tropical coast and isolated afternoon showers and
thunderstorms about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Moderate to fresh SE winds
along much of the east coast shifting NE inland. Light to moderate SE winds over
the west of the state.
Forecast for Friday
The inland will again initiate isolated afternoon thunderstorms and showers
in southern and central interior. Fine conditions will continue elsewhere apart
from isolated showers about the south-east, isolated afternoon showers or
thunderstorms about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast and western Peninsula
and isolated showers about the far north-east tropical coast. Light to moderate
SE winds will occur along the east coast becoming fresh at times north of
Cooktown. Light to moderate SE to NE winds will continue over the interior.
Forecast for Saturday
A weak ridge will persist along the east coast while another high will move
into the Great Australian Bight from the west. The inland trough will remain
almost stationary over the south-west and trigger isolated showers and
thunderstorms in a band from the south-east inland to the north-west. Fine
conditions will continue most other parts of the state apart from isolated
afternoon showers and thunderstorms about western Cape York peninsula and
isolated showers about the far north-east tropical coast. Light to moderate SE
to E winds will continue along the east coast becoming fresh at times north of
Cooktown. Light to moderate NE winds over most of the interior shifting fresh
S'ly over the west of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
The high over the Great Australian Bight will move slowly eastwards and
maintain a ridge into south-western Queensland. The inland trough will remain
near stationary and will again trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms in a
band from south-east to the north-west of the state. Isolated showers will occur
along the east coast north of about the Cardwell area. Elsewhere over the state
fine conditions will prevail. Light to moderate SE to E winds will continue
along the east coast becoming fresh at times north of Cooktown. Light to
moderate NE winds over most of the interior shifting fresh and gusty at times
S'ly over the west of the state.
Forecast for Monday
The high will remain stationary over the Great Australian Bight and will
continue to circulate moderate to fresh and gusty at times S to SE winds across
the west of the state. The inland trough will also remain almost stationary and
will trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms in the southern and central
interior and northwest. The high will push a fresh S'ly change along the
southern coast on Monday will isolated showers south of the trough and isolated
showers and thunderstorms near the trough.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high and inland trough will continue to remain near stationary in their
respective locations. The inland trough will continue to trigger showers and
thunderstorms during the afternoons but activity will be quite isolated. The
S'ly wind change will decay on Tuesday as a ridge reforms along the entire east
coast of Queensland. Isolated showers will develop in most north-east coast
districts with the moist onshore flow.
