MELBOURNE - Oct 26/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak high near New Zealand extends a weak ridge along the east coast of Queensland. Another high over Tasmania is pushing a southerly change over the southeast coast. This change will stall about the Wide Bay on Thursday before decaying. Meanwhile, a surface trough over Queensland's interior that extends from the Gulf Country to the Darling Downs, will move slowly west. An upper level trough that is moving over the southeast today will push off the coast overnight. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the central and southern interior and southeast, will tend more isolated south of the southerly change in the far southeast. It will mostly fine elsewhere in the state apart from isolated showers and thunderstorms near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Mostly moderate E to SE winds over the far north of the state. Light to moderate SW to SE winds over the western districts. Light to moderate NW to NE winds over the remaining eastern districts, but with a fresh S to SE change spreading northwards along the southern coast. Forecast for Thursday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the Wide Bay and Capricornia district, will extend inland to the central and southern interior. It will be mostly cloudy with isolated showers or drizzle areas over the southeast district and the eastern Darling Downs. Otherwise it will fine elsewhere in the state, apart from isolated showers about the northeast coast and isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the western Gulf. Moderate to fresh SE winds along much of the east coast shifting NE inland. Light to moderate SE winds over the west of the state. Forecast for Friday The high that has now moved over New Zealand will extend a ridge along the Queensland east coast. The inland trough will retreat westwards towards the Channel Country as a more vigorous trough system approaches from the west. The inland surface trough will continue to initiate afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the central and southern interior. It will be fine elsewhere in the state apart from isolated showers about the Capricornia and Wide Bay regions, isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast and western Peninsula, and isolated showers about the northeast coast. Light to moderate SE winds along the east coast, fresh at times north of Cooktown. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Saturday The high that will have moved well east of New Zealand will continue to extend a weak ridge alone the east Queensland coast. Another high in the Great Australian Bight will push the surface trough in the Channel Country slowly east and trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms in the central and southern interior. It will be fine elsewhere in the state apart from isolated showers about the central coast area, and isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Light to moderate SE winds along the east coast, fresh at times north of Cooktown. Light to moderate NE winds over most of the interior, though with a fresh southerly change in the Channel Country. Forecast for Sunday The high in the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east extending a ridge into southwestern Queensland. The surface trough will move slowly east and again be the focus for isolated showers and thunderstorms from the southern interior extending north to the Gulf Country. Elsewhere in the state fine conditions will prevail, though an moderate to fresh SE onshore wind flow will lead to isolated showers about the northeast tropical coast. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds west of the trough with light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere east of the trough. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The high in the Great Australian Bight will remain almost stationary. This high will push a fresh southerly change along the southern coast on Monday before decaying on Tuesday as a ridge develops along the east Queensland coast with moderate to fresh S to SE winds and isolated showers. The interior surface trough will stall on Monday before retreating westwards on Tuesday. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will be possible near this trough.
