MELBOURNE - Oct 25/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak high near New Zealand was moving eastwards and extended a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough near the far south-west border will continue to move eastwards and extend from the north-west to the western Darling Downs on Wednesday and Thursday. This trough will merge with a front over the south-west on Saturday before moving eastwards again. The coastal section of this trough will move over Gold Coast waters late Wednesday and reach the Wide Bay area on Thursday before decaying. An upper trough will move across south-east Queensland on Wednesday while another upper trough will affect southern and south-east Queensland on Sunday. A new high will move across the Great Australian Bight during Saturday and Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Showers and storms over the west of the state and spreading across the southern interior and into the south-east inland. Isolated showers about the east coast north of about the Cardwell to Cairns area. Fine elsewhere. Mostly moderate SE to E winds over the far north of the state. Mostly light to moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere becoming fresh along the far southern coast during the afternoon and evening. Light to moderate S to SE winds spreading across the south-west and far west of the state. Forecast for Wednesday Showers and storms over the south-east and the central interior. Isolated light showers about the east coast north of about the Cairns to cooktown area and over far northern Cape York Peninsula. Isolated afternoon showers and storms about the Gulf of Carpentaria. Fine elsewhere. Mostly moderate SE to E winds over the far north of the state. Mostly light to moderate NE to NW winds before light to moderate SW to SE winds over the west of the state and much of the southern inland. A fresh S to SE change will spread northwards along the far southern coast during the afternoon and evening. Forecast for Thursday The S to SE wind change will decay about the Wide Bay area as ridging reforms along the entire east coast. Isolated showers and storms over the Wide Bay and Capricornia extending inland to the central and southern interior. Isolated showers or drizzle along the far southern coast and adjacent areas. Isolated afternoon showers about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and the east coast north of Cooktown. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds along much of the east coast shifting NE inland. Light to moderate SE winds over the west of the state. Forecast for Friday Fine across much of the state. Isolated afternoon showers and storms over the central and southern interior with isolated showers about the Capricornia area. Isolated afternoon showers about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and the east coast north of Cooktown. Light to moderate SE winds along the east coast fresh at times north of Cooktown. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Saturday Fine across much of the state. Isolated afternoon showers and storms over the central and southern interior with isolated showers about the central coast area. Isolated afternoon showers about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria and the east coast north of Cooktown. Light to moderate SE winds along the east coast fresh at times north of Cooktown. Light to moderate NE winds over the interior shifting freshening S to SE over the south-west and west of the state where increasing fire dangers. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A new upper trough will move across NSW during the weekend, destabilizing conditions over south-east Queensland. At the same time a new high over the Great Australian Bight will move eastwards and push the inland trough eastwards across the interior. So showers and storms will become more scattered about the south-east on Sunday. The trough will move into the tropics on Monday and tuesday and trigger showers and storms from the north-west to the south-east tropics. In the wake of this trough the ridge along the east coast will again reform and form with moderate to fresh SE winds occurring in all east coast districts on Tuesday. With the freshening of these winds showers will again increase in exposed coastal areas. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
