MELBOURNE - Oct 23/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough will enter the far southwest of the state later today. A new high in the Southern Ocean will move east over the next few days to lie near Tasmania by Wednesday. Forecast for the rest of Monday Patchy cloud with isolated thunderstorms in the southwest of the state but with little or no rain expected. Very warm to hot over the southwest ahead of the surface trough. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and Northwest District. Isolated showers about the tropical east coast and interior. Fine over the remainder of the state. Light to moderate northeast to southeast winds over most of the state, fresh at times about the northeast coast. Forecast for Tuesday The surface trough should move further eastwards to lie between the northwest district and the southeast interior late in the day. The trough is expected to bring isolated thunderstorms to the western districts and the southern interior but with little or no rain. Isolated showers about the central and northeast coast, and some isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and far northwest. Fine elsewhere. Moderate southeast to northeast winds east of the trough, fresh at times about the coast. Moderate west to southwest winds west of the trough. Forecast for Wednesday The surface trough should continue stretching between the northwest district and the southeast interior, while a new high pressure system should enter the Tasman Sea from the west. The surface trough, along with an upper level trough over the southeast of the state, will produce showers and thunderstorms about the central and southern interior and the southeast of the state. Fine over the rest of the state except for isolated showers about the northeast coast and isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Forecast for Thursday The high pressure system should drift further east over New Zealand. The upper trough should move offshore and forms a weak low off the coast of New South Wales. This low extends fresh S'ly winds over far southern waters and results in isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southeast of the state. Fine over the remainder of the state, except for isolated showers about the northeast coast and isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The new high should maintain a weak ridge along the east coast of Queensland, while the surface trough should drift further inland into the southern interior. The onshore flow should produce some isolated showers and possible thunderstorms about the southeast districts. Fine over the rest of the state for much of the outlook period, except for some isolated showers and storms in the far north, mainly about the coasts. An approaching upper trough could produce some patchy rain about the southern interior during the weekend. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
