MELBOURNE - Oct 21/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown and over northeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move only slowly eastwards over the next few days whilst gradually weakening. A weak upper trough over the east of the state will push offshore later today. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Showers about the east coast generally, more frequent on the NE tropical coast. Isolated afternoon showers over inland eastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over western Cape York Peninsula and the western Gulf district. Dry over the remainder of the state. Fresh to strong winds across the tropics. Moderate to fresh SE winds about most of the east coast. Moderate NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Sunday The southern high has not moved and maintains strong winds north of Cooktown . Showers continuing about the east coast but decreasing. Isolated afternoon showers over inland eastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms expanding towards the south over the northwest region in the afternoon. Fine over the remainder of the state. Forecast for Monday A new surface trough, or southerly wind change, enters the Channel Country with little or no patchy light rain. Rather hot over the interior ahead of the wind change associated with northerly winds. Showers continue to decrease about the east coast with fine conditions on the Capricorn and southeast coasts. No change in the weather over the tropics. Forecast for Tuesday The western trough or southerly wind change will progress east, reaching the northwest district and almost to the western Darling Downs region, but no weather associated with it. Thunderstorm activity persisting over the northwest region and the western half of Cape York Peninsula. Showers over the remainder of the tropics and decreasing about the east coast. Fine over southern Queensland and the interior as well as the southeast and the Capricorn coast. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday A new southern high will enter the Tasman Sea and develop a ridge along the east coast with freshening SE winds. Showers and thunderstorms may develop over the southeast interior in the afternoon as the western trough stalls in this region. Further west patchy rain will eventually develop and showers to persist about most of the east coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday.
