Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland.
The high will move only slowly eastwards over the next few days whilst gradually
weakening. A weak upper trough over the east of the state will push offshore
late on Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers will continue about the east coast, tending scattered about
the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers will continue elsewhere about the
tropics with isolated thunderstorms possible across northern parts of the Gulf
Country and western Cape York Peninsula. Fine over the remainder of the state.
Strong SE winds north of Cooktown and over northeast Gulf waters. Moderate to
fresh E to SE winds will continue about the remainder of the east coast with
moderate to fresh E to NE winds over the interior. A Very High fire danger in
the Central West district.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers will continue about the east coast and adjacent inland
tending scattered about the north tropics. Isolated afternoon showers will again
develop across the tropics with isolated late thunderstorms about the northern
Gulf Country and western Cape York Peninsula. Fine elsewhere. Strong SE winds
will persist north of Cooktown and over northeast Gulf waters. Moderate to fresh
E to SE winds will persist about the remainder of the east coast with moderate
to fresh E to NE winds over the interior. A Very High fire danger in the Central
West district.
Forecast for Sunday
The high in the Tasman Sea will move southeast and weaken further. Isolated
showers will continue about most of the coast but fine conditions should develop
about the Southeast Coast district. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms
will develop in the far northwest of the state and western Cape York Peninsula.
Fine over the remainder. Strong SE winds will persist north of Cooktown and in
the far northeast Gulf.
Forecast for Monday
The high in the Tasman Sea will continue to move away to the southeast and
weaken whilst a weak trough moves through southeast Australia and into the far
southwest of Queensland. Strong winds will finally ease north of Cooktown and in
the Gulf. Isolated showers about the east coast north of Mackay with isolated
afternoon showers and thunderstorms about the tropics and northwest of the
state. Fine over the remainder.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough will move further east in to the southern interior of the
state bringing patchy cloud and possible thunderstorms to the Channel Country
and Maranoa and Warrego districts. However, little if any rain is expected from
these thunderstorms. Isolated showers will persist about the east coast north of
about Mackay with isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms elsewhere in the
tropics. Isolated showers may also develop about the Granite Belt through the
day. Fine elsewhere.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The high in the Tasman Sea will drift slowly to the southeast of New Zealand,
but continue to extend a weakening ridge along the east Queensland coast. Stable
conditions will continue across much of the state on Wednesday and Thursday with
only isolated showers in the tropics and possible thunderstorms in western Cape
York Peninsula and the far west of the state. An upper trough crossing
southeast Australia on Friday may trigger some showers and thunderstorms about
the far south of the state with mostly fine conditions elsewhere.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
