MELBOURNE - Oct 20/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Bowen. A Strong Wind Warning is current over northeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Flood warning current for coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Cardwell and adjacent inland catchments. Flood warning for the Tully River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high off the northern New South Wales coast extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move only slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea and also slowly weaken. An upper level trough over the Coral Sea will continue to move east Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers will continue about the east coast, tending scattered about the north tropics. Isolated showers will develop in the afternoon across the tropics with isolated thunderstorms developing late on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. It will again be fine over the rest of the interior and across southern Queensland. Strong SE winds north of Bowen will contract to north of Cooktown by the afternoon. Strong SE winds over northern Gulf waters will ease in the afternoon. Moderate to fresh SE winds will continue about the remainder of the east coast, with moderate E to NE winds over the interior. There is a Very High fire danger in the Central West. Forecast for Saturday The high over the central Tasman Sea will become almost stationary and weaken further. The high will continue to extend a ridge along the Queensland east coast with strong SE winds north of Cooktown, and moderate to fresh winds elsewhere along the east coast. Isolated showers will continue about the east coast, scattered about the north tropics. Isolated showers will again develop across the tropics in the afternoon with isolated late thunderstorms on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Forecast for Sunday The Tasman high will weaken further leading to a further reduction in winds about the east coast though strong winds will continue north of Cooktown. Isolated showers about the east coast will reduce further with fine conditions developing on the southeast coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will develop in the far northwest and western Cape York Peninsula. Forecast for Monday The Tasman high will remain stationary but continue to weaken with strong winds easing north of Cooktown. There will be little change of the weather from Sunday although it will become fine on the Capricorn and Wide Bay coasts. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A Tasman high will drift slowly to the southeast towards northern New Zealand, but continue to extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast. Stable fine conditions will continue across much of the state with only isolated showers in the tropics, and possible thunderstorms in western Cape York Peninsula, the far northwest and far southwest.
