MELBOURNE - Oct 20/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Mackay. A strong wind warning is current over north-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Flood warning current for coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Cardwell and adjacent inland catchments. Flood warning for the Tully River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A The high off the New South Wales coast extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move only slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea over the next few days. An upper level trough over eastern Queensland will move offshore tomorrow. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Showers generally about the east coast with a maximum on the northeast tropical coast. Isolated showers generally across the tropics and one or late thunderstorms on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Dry over the remainder of the interior and southern Queensland. Fresh to strong SE winds over much of the tropics, moderate to fresh SE winds about the remainder of the east coast. Moderate NE winds over the interior. High to very high fire dangers across the interior. Forecast for Friday Showers continuing about the east coast but gradually decreasing. Isolated showers again across the tropics in the afternoon with one or two late thunderstorms on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Dry over the interior and across southern Queensland. Strong SE winds contracting a little north to about Bowen. Strong SE winds over northern Gulf waters. Moderate to fresh SE winds generally about the remainder of the east coast. Moderate NE winds over the interior. A high to very high fire danger over the interior. Forecast for Saturday Not much change in the overall weather pattern across the state, showers generally about the east coast but continuing to decrease. Almost fine on the southeast coast. Isolated afternoon showers across the tropics again and one or two late thunderstorms on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. The high over the central Tasman Sea will weaken further and ease SE winds about the east coast. This will contract the strong winds north to about Cairns. Strong winds however continuing over northern Gulf waters. Forecast for Sunday The high weakening further leading to a further reduction in winds about the east coast and a contraction of the strong winds north to Cooktown. The shower activity on the east coast reducing further with fine conditions developing on the southeast coast. Little change elsewhere in the state. Forecast for Monday A new but weak trough enters the southwest of the state with little or no patchy rain. Rather hot and dry over the interior with northerly winds. No change over the tropics, becoming fine on the Capricorn and Wide Bay coasts. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A new high builds over the Tasman Sea with a ridge rapidly developing about the east coast again. This will freshen coastal winds and maintain showers about most of the coast north of Fraser Island. The building of the ridge will stall the inland trough and push it back west on Tuesday. By Wednesday however the rough moves back east again across the Channel Country then across to the western Darling Downs on Thursday. Patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms will occur with this trough. No change over the remainder of Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
