MELBOURNE - Oct 19/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Mackay. A strong wind warning is current over north-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters. A Flood Warning is current for coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Cardwell, and adjacent inland catchments. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The high off the New South Wales coast extended a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move only slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea over the next few days. An upper level trough over western Queensland and will into eastern districts during the day and off the coast on Friday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Showers will continue about the east tropical coast and tend to rain about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers will occur over the north-east tropical inland while isolated late storms will occur about the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Isolated weak showers or drizzle will occur during the morning along the southern coast. Fresh to strong SE winds will continue along much of the east tropical coast and north-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Moderate E to SE winds will continue along the southern coast shifting NE over the interior. High to very high fire dangers across the interior. Forecast for Friday The high will continue to slowly weaken over the Tasman Sea. Showers will continue along the east tropical coast with a decreasing trend. Again some morning drizzle or weak showers may occur along the southern coast. Strong SE winds will contract to north of Cairns during the morning and continue over the north-east Gulf of Carpentaria. Again isolated showers will occur over the north-east tropical inland with one or two late thunderstorms about the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Dry conditions will continue over the remainder of Queensland. Forecast for Saturday The high over the central Tasman Sea will weaken further so the strong SE winds will contract to north of Cooktown during the morning while continuing about the north-east Gulf of Carpentaria until the evening before decreasing below 25 knots. Showers will become more isolated along the east tropical coast while isolated weak showers and drizzle will occur along the southern coast. Again one or two thunderstorms will develop on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Remaining dry across the interior of the state. Forecast for Sunday The high will remain near stationary over the central Tasman Sea and direct moderate to fresh SE winds and isolated showers onto the east tropical coast. Along the southern coast conditions will be fine. Isolated late thunderstorms will occur on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Remaining dry across the interior. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday A weak ridge will persist along the east coast while the upper ridge will move into far eastern districts as a very weak upper trough moves across the state during Tuesday. Some high cloud will move across the south-west and southern interior from Monday onwards but no rain will occur. Isolated showers will continue along the east coast in the moderate to fresh onshore stream. A surface trough will move across the far south-west on Wednesday but given the dry conditions do not expect any deep convection developing.
