Weather Situation
The high off the New South Wales coast extended a firm ridge along the east
coast of Queensland. The high will move only slowly eastwards across the Tasman
Sea over the next few days. An upper level trough over western Queensland and
will into eastern districts during the day and off the coast on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Showers will continue about the east tropical coast and tend to rain about
the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers will occur over the north-east
tropical inland while isolated late storms will occur about the west coast of
Cape York Peninsula. Isolated weak showers or drizzle will occur during the
morning along the southern coast. Fresh to strong SE winds will continue along
much of the east tropical coast and north-east Gulf of Carpentaria waters.
Moderate E to SE winds will continue along the southern coast shifting NE over
the interior. High to very high fire dangers across the interior.
Forecast for Friday
The high will continue to slowly weaken over the Tasman Sea. Showers will
continue along the east tropical coast with a decreasing trend. Again some
morning drizzle or weak showers may occur along the southern coast. Strong SE
winds will contract to north of Cairns during the morning and continue over the
north-east Gulf of Carpentaria. Again isolated showers will occur over the
north-east tropical inland with one or two late thunderstorms about the west
coast of Cape York Peninsula. Dry conditions will continue over the remainder of
Queensland.
Forecast for Saturday
The high over the central Tasman Sea will weaken further so the strong SE
winds will contract to north of Cooktown during the morning while continuing
about the north-east Gulf of Carpentaria until the evening before decreasing
below 25 knots. Showers will become more isolated along the east tropical coast
while isolated weak showers and drizzle will occur along the southern coast.
Again one or two thunderstorms will develop on the west coast of Cape York
Peninsula. Remaining dry across the interior of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will remain near stationary over the central Tasman Sea and direct
moderate to fresh SE winds and isolated showers onto the east tropical coast.
Along the southern coast conditions will be fine. Isolated late thunderstorms
will occur on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Remaining dry across the
interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A weak ridge will persist along the east coast while the upper ridge will
move into far eastern districts as a very weak upper trough moves across the
state during Tuesday. Some high cloud will move across the south-west and
southern interior from Monday onwards but no rain will occur. Isolated showers
will continue along the east coast in the moderate to fresh onshore stream. A
surface trough will move across the far south-west on Wednesday but given the
dry conditions do not expect any deep convection developing.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
