MELBOURNE - Oct 19/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to St Lawrence. A strong wind warning is current over northern Gulf waters. A Flood Warning is current for coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Cardwell, and adjacent inland catchments. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high off the New South Wales coast extends a ridge of higher pressure along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move only slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea over the next few days. An upper level trough occurs over western Queensland and will also move east. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Showers generally about the east coast tending to rain areas about the northeast tropical coast with moderate to heavy falls. Isolated showers across the inland tropics generally, tending to isolated thunderstorms over the northwest region this evening. Fine over the remainder of the state. Fresh to strong SE winds about the east coast north of St Lawrence and over northern Gulf waters. Moderate to fresh SE winds over the remainder of the tropics and about the southeast coast. Moderate NE winds over the interior. High to very high fire dangers across the interior. Forecast for Thursday Showers to continue about the east coast with a maximum on the northeast tropical coast. Isolated showers generally over the inland tropics with one or two thunderstorms about the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Dry over the remainder of the state. Fresh to strong SE winds will continue along the east tropical coast and northern Gulf waters. Moderate E to SE winds will continue along the southern coast, shifting NE over the interior. High to very high fire dangers across the interior. Forecast for Friday The high will continue to slowly weaken over the Tasman Sea. Showers will continue along the east coast but decreasing overall. Strong winds easing a little and contracting north about Bowen. Isolated showers across the inland tropics again with one or two late thunderstorms about the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Dry over the remainder of Queensland. Forecast for Saturday As the high continues to weaken winds will ease about the east coast with strong winds contracting north to about Cooktown. Elsewhere showers decreasing about the east coast, fine on the southeast coast. Isolated showers generally across the tropics with one or two thunderstorms on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Remaining dry across the interior and southern Queensland. Forecast for Sunday Not much change from Saturday except that the strong winds over the northeast tropics have ended. Elsewhere showers decreasing about the east coast, fine on the southeast coast. Isolated showers generally across the tropics with one or two thunderstorms on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. Remaining dry across the interior and southern Queensland. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday A weak ridge will persist along the east coast while the upper ridge will move into far eastern districts. As a result showers will continue to decrease about the east coast. In the west increasing instability and heat will lead to isolated showers and thunderstorms developing as a weak trough enters the southwest of the state. This trough will advance further east across the southern border on Wednesday with showers and thunderstorms. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
