MELBOURNE - Oct 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to St Lawrence. A Flood Warning is current for coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Cardwell, and adjacent inland catchments. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high off the New South Wales coast extended a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move only slowly eastwards across the Tasman Sea over the next few days. An upper trough over the south-west of the state will sharpen a little, then move across southern Queensland during today and Thursday and off the coast on Friday. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Showers to continue along the east tropical coast and become more isolated over the eastern tropical interior. Further rain areas with moderate to heavy falls about the North Tropical Coast. Along the south-east coast isolated showers and drizzle areas are likely, chiefly during the morning. Isolated afternoon and evening showers and storms will occur over the north-west of the state. Fresh to strong SE winds will continue along the east tropical coast with moderate to fresh SE winds along the southern coast. Winds will shift moderate E to NE over the interior. High to very high fire dangers across the interior. Forecast for Thursday The high over the Tasman Sea will weaken a little. So showers will continue along the east tropical coast with rain areas and some moderate to heavy falls about the North Tropical Coast. Possible afternoon thunderstorms will occur about western Cape York Peninsula. Isolate morning showers may occur along parts of the southern coast. Fine across most inland areas of the state. Fresh to strong SE winds will continue along the east tropical coast. Moderate E to SE winds will continue along the southern coast and shift E to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Friday The high will continue to slowly weaken over the Tasman Sea. Showers will continue along the east tropical coast will be mostly isolated but still tend to scattered about the North Tropical Coast. The fresh to strong SE winds along the east tropical coast with ease during the morning. Along the southern coast winds will be light to moderate E to SE and shift E to NE inland. Possible afternoon thunderstorms will occur about western Cape York Peninsula. Over the interior and the southeast of the state conditions will be fine under the influence of the upper ridge. Forecast for Saturday The high will remain near stationary over the Tasman Sea and direct moderate to fresh SE winds and a few showers onto the east tropical coast. Along the southern coast isolated morning showers and mostly moderate E to SE winds will occur. Possible afternoon thunderstorms will develop about western Cape York Peninsula. Fine conditions will continue over the interior and the south-east under the influence of an upper ridge. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A weak ridge will persist along the east coast while the upper ridge will move into far eastern districts. As a result isolated showers will persist along the east coast north of about Yeppoon, tending more scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Possible afternoon thunderstorms will occur about western Cape York Peninsula. Some high cloud may move into the southwest late in the day as the next upper trough moves over the south-west of the continent. Temperatures over the interior will warm as NE winds develop. Moderate to fresh SE winds will continue along the east tropical coast while light to moderate E to NE winds will continue along the southern coast.
