MELBOURNE - Oct 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Cooktown to Sandy Cape. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for Gulf waters north of Kowanyama for Wednesday evening. A Flood Warning is current for coastal rivers and streams between Cooktown and Cardwell, and adjacent inland catchments. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high off the New South Wales coast extends a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move slowly north-eastwards across the Tasman Sea over the next few days. An upper trough over the south-west of the state will sharpen a little, then move across southern Queensland on Wednesday and Thursday and off the coast on Friday. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Showers along the east coast becoming scattered about the Central Coast, tending to rain at times with moderate to heavy falls about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the northwest and southwest. Isolated showers over the remaining tropics and east coast. Fresh to strong SE winds along the east coast. Moderate E to NE winds over the interior. High to very high fire dangers over much of the interior of the state. Forecast for Wednesday Showers to continue along the east tropical coast and become more isolated over the eastern tropical interior. Further rain areas and moderate to heavy falls about the North Tropical Coast. Along the southeast coast isolated showers and drizzle areas. Isolated afternoon and evening showers and storms over the northwest. Fresh to strong SE winds along the east tropical coast, moderate to fresh SE winds along the southern coast. Moderate E to NE winds over the interior. High to very high fire dangers through the interior. Forecast for Thursday The high in the Tasman Sea will weaken further, easing showers about the east tropical coast. Rain areas about the North Tropical Coast will also ease with moderate to heavy falls possible early. Possible afternoon thunderstorms about western Cape York Peninsula. Fine across most inland areas and the south-east. Fresh to strong SE winds along the east tropical coast, tending moderate E to SE along the southern coast. Moderate E to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Friday The high will continue to weaken over the western Tasman Sea, further weakening the ridge along the Queensland east coast. Fresh to strong SE winds will continue along the east tropical coast, tending light to moderate E to SE along the southern coast. Showers along the east tropical coast will be mostly isolated but still tend to scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Possible afternoon thunderstorms about western Cape York Peninsula. Over the interior and the southeast of the state conditions will be fine under the influence of the upper ridge. Forecast for Saturday The high will continue to weaken over the western Tasman Sea, further weakening the ridge along the Queensland east coast. Fresh SE winds along the east tropical coast, tending light to moderate E to SE along the southern coast. Isolated showers along the east coast north of about Fraser Island, tending scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Possible afternoon thunderstorms about western Cape York Peninsula. Fine over the interior and the southeast under the influence of an upper ridge. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday A weak ridge will persist along the east coast while the upper ridge will move into eastern districts. Isolated showers will persist along the east coast north of about Yeppoon, tending more scattered about the North Tropical Coast. Possible afternoon thunderstorms about western Cape York Peninsula. Some high cloud may move into the southwest as the next upper trough moves over the west of the continent. Temperatures over the interior will warm as NE winds develop. Moderate to fresh SE winds will continue along the east tropical coast while light to moderate E to NE winds will continue along the southern coast.
