MELBOURNE - Oct 14/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for the Channel Country, Northwest, Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Maranoa and Warrego, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is current for the Northern Goldfields, Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Maranoa and Warrego and Channel Country districts. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough lies over the state's southwest, and will move into the eastern districts by late Saturday. An upper level trough also lies over the southwest, and will move over the southeast during Saturday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Patchy rain and scattered thunderstorms about the southern interior, central interior and the northern interior of the state. Scattered thunderstorms also about the Gulf Country. Just the chance of some isolated showers or thunderstorms about the far eastern districts for the remainder of the afternoon, and patchy thundery rain areas overnight. Fresh to strong NW winds over the west of the state, shifting SW over the Channel Country. Light to moderate NW to NE winds over the eastern districts. A Severe to Extreme Fire Danger over the Channel Country, Central West and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts for the remainder of Friday afternoon. Forecast for Saturday Early patchy thundery rain across the southern tropics and the central coast. The upper level trough should produce thundery rain over the southern interior very early in the morning, contracting into the southeastern districts later in the morning as the upper trough moves east. Scattered showers and thunderstorms then developing about the Darling Downs, Southeast Coast and Wide Bay and Burnett districts, and some of these storms may produce moderate to locally heavy falls and may be severe. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the remaining eastern districts, and tending scattered about the northern tropics. Dry over the interior. A Severe to Extreme Fire Danger over much of the interior including the Channel Country, Northwest, Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Maranoa and Warrego, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. Moderate to fresh NW winds over the southeast districts ahead of a drier SW change, contracting offshore during the evening. Moderate to fresh SW winds over the state's west, light to moderate SE to NE winds over the northern tropics. Forecast for Sunday A high over Victoria will extend drier air over the southern parts of the state, producing fine conditions about the southern districts. Isolated showers and storms about the central coast and nearby inland areas, and also over the northern tropics. Fine and settled in the west. Forecast for Monday The high will move over New South Wales and extend a ridge along the east coast. This will freshen SE winds and produce some isolated showers about the southeast coast and nearby inland areas, and extending to the central coast and interior during the day. Fine over the west of the state, and isolated showers and storms about the northern districts. Forecast for Tuesday The high should lie over the New South Wales Coast, and will extend isolated showers and fresh to strong winds along the eastern districts. Isolated showers and thunderstorms continuing over the northern districts. An upper level trough will help some isolated showers and thunderstorms form in the western districts. Fine over the southern, southeast and central interior. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The high will remain near the northern New South Wales coast mid week, maintaining showers and fresh winds about the east coast, with more widespread showers about the northeast coast. Fine and dry over the southern and central interior. Some isolated showers and thunderstorms over the western districts, clearing from Thursday. Isolated showers and thunderstorms remaining about the northern tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
