Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Oct 5/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weakening ridge of high pressure extends along the east coast of
Queensland. A surface trough lies through western parts of the state and will
move east over the interior during today. An upper level trough will move
rapidly east over southern parts of the state today.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Cloudy over the Southeast Coast district with rain areas and possible
thunder. Early thundery rain areas over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and
southern Burnett will tend to scattered showers and thunderstorms during the
afternoon. Morning patchy light rain elsewhere over eastern districts will tend
to isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Fine over the Peninsula
district and far west of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
elsewhere over the interior, clearing from the west during the day. Cool daytime
temperatures over much of the state, particularly the southeast. Moderate to
fresh NW to NE winds over western districts ahead of a SW change extending from
the west. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the northern tropics. Light to
moderate NW to NE winds elsewhere. A Very High fire danger over the Central West
district.
Forecast for Friday
The upper trough will move off the southeast coast early with rain areas
contracting offshore. A surface trough will persist through the interior of the
state however, with unstable conditions to its east. Isolated showers and
possible afternoon thunderstorms are therefore expected over eastern districts
south of about Cooktown. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will also persist
over the Gulf Country and southern tropical interior. A new upper trough will
approach far southwestern parts of the state, generating isolated showers and
possible afternoon thunderstorms over the far southern interior. Fine conditions
will occur elsewhere over the state apart from isolated afternoon showers over
the Peninsula south of about Weipa. Moderate to fresh NW to NE winds along the
east coast, tending light to moderate SE to NE over the northern tropics.
Moderate to fresh SW to NW winds over the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Saturday
The new upper level trough will move rapidly east over the state and most
likely contract off the southeast coast in the late afternoon or evening.
Showers and thunderstorms will occur over areas southeast of about Rockhampton
to Cunnamulla, more widespread over southeast districts. A surface trough will
also move over central and southeast districts, contracting the shower and
thunderstorm activity east during the day. Isolated afternoon showers are likely
about the tropics and also about the Central Coast district. Isolated afternoon
and evening thunderstorms may develop about the west coast of Cape York
Peninsula. Fine conditions are expected over remaining parts of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough should now lie well off the southeast coast. A new upper
trough should approach the southwestern border during the day, increasing cloud
and generating some patchy rain over the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego
districts. Isolated light showers are likely over the northern tropics. Fine
conditions are expected elsewhere under a dry, stable airmass.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Some uncertainty exists with the movement of the new trough but at this stage
the most likely scenario is for it to amplify as it moves rapidly northeast over
the state on Monday, extending a thundery rain band over southern and central
parts of the state. The trough will most likely have cleared the coast on
Tuesday, with a dry stable airmass generating fine conditions across much of the
state in its wake. However, a moist onshore flow may produce scattered showers
about the Central Coast and tropical coast on Tuesday and Wednesday.
