Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 30/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
Dry W to SW winds extend over much of Queensland. A new trough will enter far
southwestern Queensland late tonight.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Early morning fog patches along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and over
eastern districts north of Fraser Island. Isolated light showers over far
northern Cape York Peninsula. Fine over the remainder of the state. A Very High
fire danger over the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Northwest, Central
West, Central Highlands and Coalfields and Capricornia districts. Mostly light
to moderate SW to SE winds, tending NW to NE along much of the east coast in the
afternoon.
Forecast for Saturday
The new trough will move east over southern parts of the state and contract
off the southeast coast late in the day. Fresh to strong and gusty W to SW winds
will extend over much of the interior in the wake of the trough, with very dry
and windy conditions increasing fire dangers. The trough will increase
instability near the southern border, with showers and isolated thunderstorms
expected. Isolated light showers will persist over the far northeast tropics and
also possibly occur on remaining parts of the southeast coast during the
morning. Fine conditions will continue over the remainder of the state. A
surface low will most likely develop off the northeast New South Wales coast
late in the day, extending a fresh to strong SW wind flow into far southern
Queensland waters at night.
Forecast for Sunday
The low off the northeast New South Wales coast should move further east into
the Tasman Sea as a high moves east over southeastern Australia. Fresh to strong
SW'ly winds will most likely continue to extend over southern Queensland waters.
Winds should ease slightly through the southern and central interior, reducing
fire dangers. An upper level trough will continue to generate unstable
conditions in the far south, with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible
over the southern border ranges and Gold Coast. The high will extend a ridge and
fine conditions over the remainder of the state. Cool temperatures are expected
over the southern interior in the S'ly wind flow.
Forecast for Monday
The low should move further east over the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand. The
high will remain slow moving near Tasmania and combine with the low to extend a
fresh to strong S'ly wind flow and an increasing S'ly swell into southern
Queensland waters. The upper trough will most likely amplify into southeast
districts, increasing instability with showers and isolated thunderstorms
expected on and east of the Great Dividing Range. Isolated light showers will
occur over Torres Strait. Conditions will remain fine elsewhere over the state
in the dry, stable airmass associated with the high.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high will weaken as it moves east over the Tasman Sea during the outlook
period. The low will also weaken near New Zealand. Winds will therefore
gradually ease over southern Queensland waters. Isolated light showers will
occur over exposed parts of the east coast in the onshore wind flow. A new
trough will most likely enter western Queensland during Wednesday and extend a
patchy, thundery rain band east over the state.
