Weather Situation
A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast. A
surface and upper trough will move into far western parts of the state late
Wednesday. The ridge will weaken as the high moves over New Zealand and the
troughs moves rapidly east. The troughs will push off the southern coast during
late Thursday afternoon or evening.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Patchy thundery rain in southern districts extending east during the rest of
the afternoon and evening. Possible isolated, mostly light showers in northern
Peninsula. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the tropics,
fresh at times along the northeast coast. Moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere,
fresh and gusty with Severe fire dangers over southern Central West districts.
A Very High fire danger in the Northwest, Peninsula, and northern parts of the
Central West district.
Forecast for Thursday
Thundery rain will move east over southern and central parts of the state
south of about Longreach to St Lawrence, clearing the coast by evening. Daytime
temperatures will be cooler behind the trough. Isolated light showers will
persist over the northeast tropics and are also expected to develop over
remaining parts of central districts during the afternoon and evening. Very High
fire danger in Northwest, Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, and Darling Downs
and Granite Belt.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough will move off the central Queensland coast in the morning.
Cool, dry W to SW winds will extend over much of the state in its wake.
Conditions will be fine across the state apart from isolated light showers on
the west coast of the Peninsula district. A new upper trough will begin to
amplify over South Australia.
Forecast for Saturday
A new surface trough will enter far southwest of the state early in the
morning and rapidly move through the rest of the state, with fresh and gusty
southwesterly winds behind the trough. The trough will push off the southern
coast in the evening, with a possible surface low developing off the northern
New South Wales. The upper level trough will move east over southern parts of
the state, greatly increasing instability with possible showers and isolated
thunderstorms near the southern border. Fine conditions will continue over the
rest of the state apart from isolated light showers over Cape York
Peninsula.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough will persist about the far southeast on Sunday maintaining
instability and isolated showers and thunderstorms near the New South Wales
border. Fresh to strong SW'ly winds are expected in the early morning south of
Bowen before easing in most waters late morning. As the low deepens in response
to the upper trough, fresh to strong southwesterly winds will be maintained in
the southeast. Isolated showers are expected about parts of the northern
Peninsula and possible isolated afternoon showers about the north tropical
coast. Fine conditions will persist in the rest of the state as a ridge of high
pressure maintains.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The strengthening surface low will move to the southeast extending a surface
trough north along the southern Queensland coast with fresh to strong S to SE'ly
winds and isolated showers. The surface trough will extend to about the
Capricorn by the evening. The trough will continue to move north along the
coast, extending fresh to strong S to SE'ly winds and isolated showers along
most of the Queensland coast on Tuesday and Wednesday. A stable ridge of high
pressure should maintain fine conditions over remaining parts of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
