MELBOURNE - Sep 22/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high off the coast of New South Wales extends a weakening ridge along the Queensland east coast. A surface trough over the interior of Queensland will move slowly east across southern Queensland during today. Forecast for the rest of Friday Fine over most of the state with only isolated showers about the east coast between Yeppoon and Cooktown. Strong SE winds will continue over offshore waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. Maximum temperatures are expected to be above average throughout much of the state's interior. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough moves further east to lie from the northern Channel Country into the Darling Downs and an upper trough will move across southeast Australia, increasing instability about the south of the state. Isolated afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms are expected to develop over the southeast interior of the state. Fine over most of the rest of the state with only isolated showers about parts of the central and North Tropical Coast districts. Maximum temperatures will remain above average throughout much of the state's interior. S to SW winds about the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego districts with moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Sunday The ridge along the east coast should weaken further as a more significant upper level trough moves across New South Wales, increasing instability further over southeast Queensland. The surface trough is expected to move through the southeast region generating scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, chiefly in the afternoon. Fine over the rest of the state with maximum temperatures remaining above average about most of the interior. Forecast for Monday The surface trough should move north along the east coast, reaching the Capricornia coast by the end of the day. A high in the Tasman Sea high will extend a ridge along the southern Queensland coast in the wake of the trough. Isolated showers are expected about the coast and adjacent inland areas near and south of the trough. Fine weather will persist throughout the rest of the state with maximum temperatures remaining above average in the interior. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The high in the Tasman Sea will extend a ridge along the east coast with isolated showers about parts of the east coast in the onshore flow. The high will continue to move east towards New Zealand through the outlook period, as a low pressure system complex develops in the Southern Ocean. As the low pressure complex moves east it will extend a trough into western Queensland late on Tuesday before moving the trough further east into the interior on Wednesday and Thursday. Hot and gusty northerly winds are expected to develop ahead of the trough. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are probable near the trough in the south on Wednesday and Thursday with fine conditions expected elsewhere in the state.
