Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 20/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A surface trough currently extends from the Gulf Country to the far southeast
coast. The trough and an associated SE'ly wind change will move north over the
southeast Queensland coast this morning and continue tracking north to extend
from the Gulf Country into central districts this evening.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated light showers developing from the south over the Southeast Coast
district. Isolated showers developing over the eastern Wide Bay and Burnett and
central districts south of about Mackay during the afternoon, with possible
isolated thunderstorms near the Wide Bay coast. Early morning fog patches over
eastern districts. Fine over the remainder of the state. Moderate to fresh S to
SE winds over western districts, also developing along the southeast and Wide
Bay coasts from the south during the day. Light to moderate SE to NE winds
elsewhere, fresh at times over the northeast tropical coast. A Very High fire
danger over the Gulf Country, Northwest, Central West and Maranoa and Warrego
Districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The SE wind change will continue moving north over the Capricorn coast,
generating isolated light showers with its passage. A new high will lie near the
northeast New South Wales coast and extend a ridge through southern Queensland
and along the east coast. SE'ly winds will strengthen along the northeast
tropical coast north of Cooktown late in the day, with isolated light showers
moving on to the coast in the onshore wind flow. The ridge will maintain fine
conditions over the remainder of the state, with daytime temperatures again
climbing to be well above the September average over the southern interior.
Forecast for Friday
The high off the northeast New South Wales coast will maintain the ridge over
the east Queensland coast. The ridge will be further reinforced by a second,
larger high moving east over the Great Australian Bight. Strong SE winds will
persist along the east coast north of Cooktown. Isolated light showers are
expected over the northeast tropics. Isolated showers are also likely on the
central coast but should clear during the afternoon. Conditions will remain fine
elsewhere over the state. A mid level trough will generate some afternoon cloud
in a band from northwestern Queensland into the southeastern interior. Daytime
temperatures will increase further over southern and western Queensland.
Forecast for Saturday
The new high will move further east towards Tasmania, maintaining the ridge
along the east Queensland coast. Strong SE winds are expected along the east
coast north of Cooktown at first but will likely ease during the day. Isolated
light showers are expected over the northeast tropical coast in the onshore wind
flow. A surface trough and an associated SE'ly wind change will move north along
the New South Wales coast. Some uncertainty exists with the movement of the
trough but at this stage it will most likely enter far southern Queensland
waters at night and produce isolated showers on the Gold Coast. The band of
cloud will shift further east to extend from northwestern Queensland into
central and southeast districts, though with little or no rain expected. Daytime
temperatures will continue to be above the September average through much of
western districts and the southeastern interior.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The high will move east over the Tasman Sea during the outlook period and
will maintain a firm ridge along much of the east Queensland coast. Isolated
light showers will occur over the northeast tropical coast in the fresh onshore
wind flow. The surface trough and associated SE'ly wind change will most likely
continue moving north along the southern Queensland coast and enter Capricorn
waters on Monday, with isolated showers occurring in the moist onshore wind flow
over the coast and adjacent inland. Conditions will remain fine over the
interior with very warm to hot daytime temperatures expected over western
districts. Cloud will possibly increase in the far southwest during Tuesday
ahead of a new surface trough moving east over central Australia.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Wednesday.
