MELBOURNE - Sep 19/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Fire Weather Warning is current for southern parts of the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego district. A Fire Weather Warning has been issued for eastern Maranoa and Warrego and southern Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts for Tuesday. A strong wind warning has been issued for coastal waters south of Cape Moreton for Tuesday afternoon. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge of high pressure extends along the east coast of Queensland. A surface trough will enter southwestern Queensland later this evening and move to the east during Tuesday. Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated light showers over the far northern tropics. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds in the east, fresh about the far north. Light to moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere, fresh and gusty in the south. A late fresh and gusty SW change in the Channel Country. Severe fire dangers over the southern Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego districts. A very high fire danger over the Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Wide Bay and Burnett, and Southeast Coast forecast districts. Forecast for Tuesday Isolated light showers over the far northern tropics. Early morning fog areas and possible drizzle about the east coast from the southern tropics to the Sunshine Coast. Afternoon cloud and possible elevated thunderstorms with little or no rain in the southeast interior. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds in the east, fresh about the far north. Light to moderate NE to NW winds in front of the surface trough, fresh and gusty about parts of the south. Moderate SW to SE winds to the west of the surface trough. Severe fire dangers over the eastern Maranoa and Warrego and southern Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. A very high fire danger over the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Northwest, Central West, Southeast Coast, and remainder of Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt Districts. Forecast for Wednesday The surface trough will contract off the southeast coast in the morning, with SE'ly winds and isolated light showers affecting coastal areas as it moves northwards, and reaching Yeppoon at night. Early morning fog patches expected over eastern districts. Isolated afternoon showers are possible about the northwest Peninsula. Fine elsewhere. Forecast for Thursday The SE wind change will continue moving northwards through the day, with isolated light showers expected along exposed parts of the coast north of Gladstone. A new high will lie near the northeast New South Wales coast and extend a ridge through southern Queensland and along the east coast. SE'ly winds will strengthen along the northeast tropical coast north of Cooktown. The ridge will maintain fine conditions over the remainder of the state, with daytime temperatures again climbing to be well above the September average over the southern interior. Forecast for Friday The ridge along the east coast will be maintained as a new stronger high moves into the Great Australian Bight, with strong SE winds expected along the east coast north of Cooktown. Isolated showers expected along the east coast north of Gladstone in the onshore flow. A surface trough will move slowly eastwards through the interior of Queensland, generating afternoon convective cloud but no rain. Temperatures during the day will increase further about southern Queensland. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The high will move slowly east and into the Tasman Sea during the outlook period, maintaining the ridge and fine conditions across much of the state. Fresh to strong SE'ly winds and isolated light showers will continue along the northeast tropical coast. A surface trough will move through southern coastal areas on Saturday and continue moving northwards, with isolated showers possible along exposed coastal parts. Very warm to hot daytime temperatures will occur over western districts and the southeast interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
