Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 17/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from
Torres Strait to Cooktown.

Weather Situation
A broad ridge of high pressure extends over southern Queensland and along the
northeast tropical coast. The ridge is expected to weaken over the next few
days.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Fine throughout the state apart from isolated light showers over northern
Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over the
northern tropics, strong at times along the coast north of Cooktown. Moderate NE
to NW winds elsewhere, fresh at times until the evening.
Forecast for Sunday
Early morning fog patches over eastern districts between about Innisfail and
Bundaberg, with possible early drizzle on the southern tropical coast. Isolated
light showers over far northern Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine over
the remainder of the state. Very warm to hot daytime temperatures over southern
parts of the state with moderate NE to NW winds, fresh and gusty at times during
the day. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over the northern tropics, gusty at
times along the northeast tropical coast. Mostly moderate E to NE winds
elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country, Central West,
Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and Coalfields,
Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast
Coast forecast districts.
Forecast for Monday
The ridge will weaken further as a surface trough enters far western parts of
the state late in the day. Morning drizzle areas are likely in a moist NE'ly
wind flow on the southern tropical and central coasts and adjacent inland. Early
morning fogs will occur on the Capricornia and the Wide Bay coasts. Isolated
light showers will persist over Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait.
Conditions will remain fine over the remainder of the state. N to NW winds will
freshen over southern districts and western parts of the state ahead of the
surface trough, with very warm to hot daytime temperatures expected.
Forecast for Tuesday
The surface trough will move east over the interior of the state and will
most likely generate some afternoon cloud over the southern interior east of
Charleville. No rainfall is expected however due to continuing dry surface
conditions. Early morning fogs will once again occur over eastern districts
north of about the Sunshine Coast, with possible early light drizzle on the
Central Coast. Isolated light showers will persist over Cape York Peninsula and
Torres Strait. Conditions will remain fine over the remainder of the state.
Cooler S'ly winds will extend over the Channel Country. Fresh N to NW winds will
maintain very warm to hot temperatures elsewhere over southern parts of the
state.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough will most likely contract off the southeast coast in the
morning with little or no rainfall expected. The trough and associated cooler
SE'ly wind change will then move north over the southern Queensland coast,
reaching Fraser Island at night. Early morning fog patches will occur over
eastern districts. Conditions will remain fine elsewhere over the state apart
from isolated light showers over Torres Strait.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The SE wind change will continuing moving north into Capricornia waters
before weakening. A new high will lie near the northeast New South Wales coast
and extend a ridge into southern Queensland and along the northeast tropical
coast. The high will move slowly east into the Tasman Sea during the outlook
period, maintaining the ridge and fine conditions across much of the state.
Early morning fog patches will occur over eastern districts. Isolated light
showers will continue over the northeast tropics and affect exposed parts of the
east coast north of about Fraser Island. A new surface trough will most likely
enter the Channel Country on Saturday. N to NW winds ahead of this trough will
result in very warm to hot daytime temperatures over southern and western
districts during the outlook period, particularly over inland parts.

Sunday.
