Weather Situation
A large high [1032hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge into
Queensland. The high will move slowly east northeast towards southern Queensland
over the next few days, maintaining a ridge and dry conditions over much of the
state. A surface trough and an associated S'ly wind change will move north over
the southern Queensland coast late from late this afternoon.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers and patchy light rain areas over Cape York Peninsula and
Torres Strait. Isolated showers developing on the Gold Coast late afternoon and
evening. Fine and dry elsewhere. Cool to cold temperatures away from the far
northern tropics, with isolated early morning frost areas over the southeast and
southern interior. Moderate to fresh and gusty S to SE winds in the tropics and
northwest. Mostly moderate SW to SE winds elsewhere, freshening along the far
southern coast late afternoon and evening. A Very High fire danger in the
Northwest district.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high will move east northeast over New South Wales, maintaining a firm
ridge and fresh to strong SE'ly winds along the east tropical coast and through
eastern Gulf waters. The surface trough will contract north over southern
Queensland waters and weaken, easing winds along the southeast coast. Isolated
showers will occur on the southeast coast, clearing south of Fraser Island in
the afternoon. Cloudy conditions will continue over Cape York Peninsula and
Torres Strait with isolated showers and patchy light rain areas. The ridge will
maintain fine and cool conditions elsewhere with early frost areas over the
southeastern interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
A broad area of high pressure will extend over southern Queensland. Strong
SE'ly winds will continue along the northeast tropical coast north of Cairns and
through far northeastern Gulf waters. Isolated showers will occur along the
northeast tropical coast in an increasingly moist onshore wind flow. Isolated
light showers will also develop along the Central coast. Fine conditions will
occur elsewhere under a dry, stable airmass. Isolated early frost patches will
possibly affect parts of the southeast interior. Daytime temperatures will climb
back to near the September average over southern districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The broad area of high pressure will remain over southern Queensland. Strong
SE'ly winds will continue along the northeast tropical coast north of Cairns and
through far northeastern Gulf waters. Isolated showers will continue along the
northeast tropical coast. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
A broad area of high pressure will persist over southern Queensland until the
high centre moves into the Tasman Sea on Sunday. Fresh to strong SE'ly winds and
isolated showers will continue along the east tropical coast. Fine conditions
will continue elsewhere due to the dry, stable airmass associated with the
ridge. Daytime temperatures will increase to be above the September average over
southern districts. Minimum temperatures will remain generally below average,
though not cool enough to result in early frosts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
