Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 7/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1030 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along the east
Queensland coast. An almost stationary trough over southwest Queensland is to
expected to begin moving east on Thursday. An upper level trough is expected to
intensify over South Australia late today.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated showers about the east coast and adjacent interior districts south
of Bowen. Isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms over the
southern and southeast interior. Cloud increasing over the Channel Country with
patchy light thundery rain developing during the evening. Fine in the northwest
and tropical interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, shifting S to SW over
the southwest.
Forecast for Thursday
Thundery rain areas over the Channel Country spreading into the central and
southern interior south of about Longreach during the day. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of the rain band over the southeast
interior. Isolated showers are expected about the central and southern coasts,
but mostly fine along the north tropical coast as a drier SE airflow develops.
Forecast for Friday
The cold front moves rapidly across eastern and most of northern Queensland
during the day with dry, cooler and gusty SW winds in its wake. Thundery rain is
expected to clear from the central and southern interior during the morning and
contract eastwards over remaining central and southeast districts during the
day. The thundery rain should clear the east coast during the afternoon.
Isolated showers over the southern tropics ahead of the front to clear in the
afternoon. Fine, windy and cool to cold in the west.
Forecast for Saturday
A large high near Western Australia is expected to extend a strong ridge and
cool to cold, fresh and gusty S to SW winds across most of the state. Fine
across the state.
Forecast for Sunday
The large high over Western Australia will slowly move east and weaken. The
high will continue to extend a strong ridge across the state with fine
conditions prevailing. Early morning frost areas are expected about the southern
and southeastern interior and extending into parts of the central interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The large high will move over southeastern Australia and slightly weaken
before moving into the Tasman Sea on Tuesday. As the high moves into the Tasman
Sea, surface winds will turn more onshore increasing the chances of coastal
showers, especially along the tropical coast as an upper level trough enhances
these showers. Early morning frosts can be expected over at least the central,
southern and southeast interior, particularly on Monday. Remaining dry in the
west.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
