MELBOURNE - Sep 6/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Strong wind warning has been cancelled for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1033 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along the east Queensland coast and is expected to continue moving east. A surface trough is expected to move across southwest Queensland this evening as a weak upper level trough moves over western New South Wales. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers about the east coast, more frequent about the central coast. A possible shower or thunderstorm near the southern border of the Channel Country this evening or overnight. Fine over the remainder of the state. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, shifting NE to NW over the southwest ahead of a late S'ly change. A very high fire danger in the Central West forecast district. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to move to the east of New Zealand. The ridge along the east Queensland coast is expected to weakening, with winds easing. Isolated showers about the east coast, increasing towards the Capricorn and Wide Bay coasts. Isolated showers developing inland over eastern districts in the afternoon. The surface trough is expected to move only very slowly through western districts with patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing over the southern and SE interior in the afternoon. Forecast for Thursday The ridge along the Queensland coast continues to weaken as the surface trough moves into the central and southern interior during the day. The upper trough is expected to move into western Queensland with thundery rain areas over the Channel Country spreading into the central and southern interior south of about Longreach in the afternoon. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing again ahead of the thundery rain over the eastern and SE interior. Showers about the east coast now decreasing. Forecast for Friday The surface trough or SW'ly wind change moves rapidly across eastern Queensland and clears the SE and central coast. Thundery rain following this change over the southern interior will also contract to the east coast in the afternoon. Some showers further north with the wind change on the central coast. Fine over the remainder of Queensland. After the trough passage over the southern Gulf waters SE winds will freshen to strong wind force. Strong NW winds will also develop ahead of the change on the SE coast, followed by strong SW winds after the change. Becoming dry and cool over western Queensland with S'ly winds. Forecast for Saturday The trough has completely cleared the east coast but some isolated showers remain over the NE tropics. Dry over the remainder of the state and cool. Strong SE winds in the southern Gulf and strong SW winds on the SE coast. A chilly morning over the southern half of the state with some early frost over the Granite Belt. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday Sunday, continuing dry throughout Queensland with a chilly morning over the interior. Early frost over the SE and southern interior. Strong SE winds continuing over the southern Gulf and developing off the NE tropical coast. Monday showers return to the NE tropics as winds tend SE'ly. Strong winds expand over the NE tropics and continue over the southern Gulf. Dry over the remainder of the state. Tuesday isolated showers return near the SE coast as SE winds develop. Showers also increase in the NE tropics and now start to develop about the central coast. Dry over the interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
