MELBOURNE - Sep 6/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1033 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along the east Queensland coast and is expected to continue moving east. A surface trough is expected to move over southwest Queensland during this afternoon and evening as a weak upper level trough moves over western New South Wales. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Isolated showers about the east coast, tending scattered about the central and southern coasts and adjacent inland. Morning drizzle over the eastern interior, tending to isolated showers in the afternoon. Cloud increasing over the southwest with patchy light rain and possible isolated thunderstorms developing during the day. Isolated afternoon showers over the far northwest Gulf Country. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, shifting NE to NW over the southwest ahead of a late S'ly change. A very high fire danger in the Central West forecast district. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to move to the east of New Zealand. The ridge along the east Queensland coast is expected to continue weakening, with winds easing. Isolated showers about the east coast in the onshore flow, tending scattered about the Capricornia and Wide Bay regions. The surface trough is expected to move only very slowly over western Queensland with early light rain clearing from the far southern interior but isolated showers and thunderstorms developing east of the trough in the afternoon and evening. An intensifying upper level trough over South Australia is expected to increase cloud once again over the Channel Country with patchy light thundery rain developing overnight. Forecast for Thursday The ridge along the tropical east Queensland coast is expected to continue weakening as the surface trough moves into the central and southern interior during the day. The upper trough is expected to move into western Queensland with thundery rain areas over the Channel Country spreading into the central and southern interior south of about Longreach during the day. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of the rain band over the southeast interior. Isolated showers are expected to continue about the central and southern coasts, but mostly fine along the north tropical coast as a drier SE airflow develops. Forecast for Friday The surface trough or cold front moves rapidly across eastern and most of northern Queensland during the day with dry, cooler gusty SW winds in its wake. Thundery rain is expected to clear from the central and southern interior during the early morning and contract eastwards over remaining central and southeast districts during the day. The rain should clear the east coast by late in the afternoon. Isolated showers over the Central Coast region clearing in the afternoon. Fine, windy and cool in the west. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday A large high near Western Australia is expected to extend a strong ridge and cool to cold, fresh and gusty SW winds across most of the state during this period. Early morning frosts can be expected over at least the central, southern and southeast interior. Remaining dry apart from the chance of isolated showers along the tropical coast on Monday as moist SE winds return to the region. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Tuesday.
