MELBOURNE - Sep 5/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown. A strong wind warning is current for northeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters, north of Cullen Point. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1034 hPa] over the eastern Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast and is expected to gradually weaken and continue moving east. A surface trough is expected to move over southwest Queensland during Tuesday afternoon and evening as a weak upper level trough moves over western New South Wales. Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated showers about the east coast, tending scattered along the southern and Capricornia coast. Isolated showers over the central and tropical interior. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast, strong at times north of Cooktown. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday Isolated showers about the east coast, tending scattered about the central and southern coasts and adjacent inland. Morning drizzle over the eastern interior, tending to isolated showers in the afternoon. Cloud increasing over the southwest with patchy light rain and possible thunderstorms developing during the day. Isolated afternoon showers over the far northwest Gulf Country. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, shifting NE to NW over the southwest ahead of a late S'ly change. A very high fire danger in the Central West forecast district. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to move to the east of New Zealand and with the ridge weakening winds will continue to easing along the Queensland coast. Decreasing showers about the east coast and some extending inland during the day. The western trough reaching the NW district, central west and the western Darling Downs. Increasing instability over the SE interior will lead to scattered afternoon showers and isolated thunderstorms through the Darling Downs and the Maranoa regions. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to continue weakening east of New Zealand, with a weakening ridge along the Queensland coast. The surface trough will reach the Gulf district and pass through the Darling Downs region. Thundery rain over western Queensland will contract to the eastern interior in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms will develop ahead of the thundery rain in the afternoon over the SE. Elsewhere showers will continue to decrease about the east coast. Forecast for Friday The surface trough moves through Gulf waters with strong SE'ly winds developing. The trough will move through eastern coastal districts with afternoon showers on the central coast. Over the SE interior thundery rain should contract to the coast during the day. Strong W'ly winds will follow the trough passage on the SE coast overnight. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday Dry and cool conditions developing throughout Queensland in the wake of the trough passage with strong SW winds on the SE coast. A rather chilly morning over the southern half of the state for Sunday with S'ly winds and early frost over the southern and SE interior. Again dry over the state. Monday, showers developing about the NE tropics as SE'ly winds return with moisture. Dry over the remainder with another chilly morning. Early frost contracting to the Granite Belt.
