MELBOURNE - Sep 4/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cairns. A strong wind warning is current for northeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters, north of Cullen Point. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1035 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. The high is expected to move east during over the next couple of days. An upper level trough is moving east through western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Monday Isolated showers about the eastern tropics, tending scattered about parts of the north tropical coast in the morning. Isolated afternoon showers over the far northwest Gulf Country. Isolated showers over central and southeast districts, tending scattered about the southern coasts during the morning and Capricornia in the afternoon. Fine in western districts. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday The high is expected to weaken near New Zealand, relaxing the ridge along the east Queensland coast and contracting strong SE winds to coastal waters north of Cooktown. A weak upper trough will persist over southeastern Queensland, resulting in unstable conditions with scattered showers about the coast. Generally isolated showers will occur elsewhere along the east coast and over the eastern interior. A surface trough is expected to move over southwest Queensland while an upper level trough will move over western New South Wales. Cloud should therefore increase over the southern Channel Country and southwest Warrego with patchy light rain developing during the day. Conditions will remain fine over the rest of western Queensland. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to move to the east of New Zealand, with the ridge weakening further and winds easing along the north tropical coast. Only isolated showers are expected along the tropical coast. The surface trough is expected to move across the interior, with isolated showers and possible thunderstorms developing ahead of it over central and southeast districts. The cloud and patchy light rain is expected to clear temporarily from the west. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to continue weakening east of New Zealand, with a weak ridge persisting along the tropical coast. A significant surface trough is expected to move over the southwest, with scattered showers and thunderstorms likely over central and southern Queensland tending to rain at night over the interior. An upper trough approaching southwest Queensland is likely to generate more cloud with patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms over the southwest. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The surface and upper trough is expected to move over southern Queensland during Friday with thundery rain areas contracting to central and southeast districts before clearing offshore late in the day or early evening. Fine conditions are then expected across the state during the weekend with dry and cool W to SW winds extending over most areas. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
