Weather Situation
A weak surface trough lies over the interior of Queensland. A high [1031 hPa]
east of Tasmania extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast. The high is
expected to move east across the southern Tasman Sea and intensify on the
weekend. An upper level trough is moving over southeast Queensland today.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers about the east coast and central and southeast interior.
Isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the southeast, mainly about
the ranges and southern border region. Fine elsewhere. Fresh to strong SE winds
along the north tropical coast. Moderate S to SE winds along the remainder of
the coast, freshening during this afternoon and evening. Light to moderate SE to
NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will continue to build as it moves east and this will increase winds
further about the east coast with the strong wind warning extending south to
Double Island Point. Showers generally about the east coast, extending inland
over eastern districts in the afternoon. Showers will become more frequent on
the central coast. Fine further west. The upper level trough has moved east off
the SE coast with reduced instability which will end the thunderstorm activity
over the SE region. Conditions should remain fine and warm over western
districts with N'ly winds.
Forecast for Sunday
Much the same as Saturday however the maximum of shower activity on the
central coast has now moved north to the NE tropical coast. With the southern
high moving further east across the Tasman Sea winds will start to ease about
the east coast with the strong wind warning contracting north to Bowen. A new
upper level trough enters western Queensland.
Forecast for Monday
The new upper level trough now enters SE Queensland and increases the shower
activity over this region. Elsewhere little change with showers about the east
coast generally, extending inland during the day. Strong SE winds remaining
north of Bowen. The secondary maximum in showers remaining on the NE tropical
coast.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Tuesday, as the southern high moves away the coastal winds will weaken and
the strong winds will contract back to Cairns. Showers persisting about the east
coast with the maximum now on the central coast. Isolated afternoon showers over
the eastern interior. Fine further west. Showers decreasing over the SE as the
upper level trough moves east off the east coast. Wednesday, with the approach
of another upper level trough showers will rapidly increase over eastern
Queensland tending to rain areas overnight. Some isolated thunderstorms may
occur over the southern interior. Little change elsewhere. Thursday, Rain areas
contracting to the SE region and increasing during the day. Fine further west
and over most of the tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
