Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 1/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from
Torres Strait to Cooktown.
A strong wind warning has been issued for coastal waters from Cooktown to Cairns
for Friday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak surface trough lies over the eastern Queensland interior. A slow
moving high lies over southeastern Australia and is expected to intensify as it
drifts slowly east into the Tasman Sea over the next few days, strengthening a
ridge along the east Queensland coast. An upper level trough will move north
into southeastern Queensland on Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers over the northeast tropical coast, more frequent between
about Cairns and Lucinda. Mostly fine elsewhere over the northern tropics and on
the central and southeast coasts with only isolated light showers. Fine over
the remainder of the state. Fresh SE winds along the east tropical and central
coasts, strong at times over offshore waters north of Cooktown. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
Early morning fog patches over eastern districts south of about Townsville.
Isolated showers over southeast districts, becoming scattered on and east of the
Great Dividing Range and south of about Gympie during the afternoon with
possible isolated thunderstorms. Isolated showers elsewhere along the exposed
east coast. Possible isolated afternoon showers over the northwestern Gulf
Country. Fine over the remainder of the state. Fresh SE winds along the central
and tropical east coasts, strong at times north of Cairns. Freshening S to SE
winds along the southern coast. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will intensify further over the Tasman Sea, extending strong SE
winds to coastal waters from Torres Strait to Sandy Cape. The upper level trough
will contract offshore over the Coral Sea. Isolated showers will occur along the
east coast and adjacent inland in the onshore wind flow, more frequent along the
exposed parts of the coast. Isolated light afternoon showers will also occur
over the eastern interior as moisture spreads inland. Fine conditions will
continue in the west.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will maintain its intensity over the Tasman Sea, extending a firm
ridge and fresh to strong SE winds along the east coast. Isolated showers will
continue to move on to the east coast and adjacent inland, more frequent along
exposed parts of the central and northeast tropical coasts. Moisture will
continue to build over the eastern interior with isolated light afternoon
showers expected. A new trough will most likely approach the southwestern
border, increasing cloud. Conditions should remain fine and warm over western
districts however in a dry N'ly wind flow.
Forecast for Monday
The new trough will most likely weaken and slip south with fine conditions
continuing over western districts. An upper level trough will amplify as it
moves east over the Queensland interior. The high will maintain its intensity as
it drifts further east over the Tasman Sea, directing a moist E'ly flow over
southeastern districts. The combination of moist winds and the upper level
trough will result in increasing cloud and showers over southeast districts,
particularly near the coast. Fresh to strong SE'ly winds will continue along the
east tropical and central coasts with isolated to scattered showers expected.
Isolated showers will also occur over the eastern interior and northern
interior.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high will weaken as it moves east towards New Zealand during the outlook
period, gradually relaxing the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Isolated
to scattered showers will continue along the east coast in the onshore wind
flow, with isolated afternoon showers also expected over the eastern interior. A
trough is expected to move into the Channel Country on Tuesday and push east
over the southern interior on Wednesday. Another trough should then approach the
southwestern border on Thursday. These troughs will most likely produce showers
and isolated thunderstorms over southern districts, particularly near the
southern border.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
