Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 31/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A strong wind warning has been issued for offshore coastal
waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown for this evening.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak surface trough lies over the eastern Queensland interior. A slow
moving high lies over southeastern Australia and is expected to intensify from
late tonight, strengthening a ridge along the east Queensland coast. The high
will intensify further into the weekend as it drifts slowly east into the Tasman
Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Isolated, mostly light showers over the northern tropics and also on the
exposed central coast and islands. Fine elsewhere. Freshening SE winds along the
central and east tropical coasts, strengthening over offshore waters north of
Cooktown during the evening. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
Isolated showers over the northeast tropical coast, more frequent between
about Cairns and Lucinda. Mostly fine elsewhere over the northern tropics and on
the central and southeast coasts with only isolated light showers. Fine over
the remainder of the state. Fresh SE winds along the east tropical and central
coasts, strong at times over offshore waters north of Cooktown. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Friday
The high will continue to intensify as it moves east into the Tasman Sea,
reinforcing the ridge further along the east Queensland coast. Strong SE winds
will extend to waters from Torres Strait to Cairns. Isolated showers will occur
in the onshore wind flow over much of the east coast. An upper level trough will
enhance shower activity over the southeast coast and produce isolated showers
over the southeastern interior during the afternoon. Fine conditions will occur
elsewhere across the interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will intensify further over the Tasman Sea, extending strong SE
winds to coastal waters from Torres Strait to Sandy Cape. The upper level trough
will contract further offshore over the Coral Sea. Isolated showers will occur
along the east coast and adjacent inland in the onshore wind flow, more frequent
along the exposed parts of the coast. Isolated light afternoon showers will also
occur over the eastern interior as moisture spreads inland. Fine conditions will
continue in the west.
Forecast for Sunday
The high will maintain its intensity over the Tasman Sea, extending a firm
ridge and fresh to strong SE winds along the east coast. Isolated showers will
continue to move on to the east coast and adjacent inland, more frequent along
exposed parts of the central and northeast tropical coasts. Moisture will
continue to build over the eastern interior with isolated light afternoon
showers expected. A new trough will most likely approach the southwestern
border, increasing cloud. Conditions should remain fine and warm over western
districts however in a dry N'ly wind flow.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high will weaken as it moves slowly east towards New Zealand during the
outlook period, gradually relaxing the ridge along the east Queensland coast.
Isolated to scattered showers will continue along the east coast in the onshore
wind flow, with isolated afternoon showers expected over the eastern interior.
The trough approaching southwestern Queensland should slip south and weaken. A
second, more significant trough will most likely approach the southwest on
Tuesday and move east over western districts on Wednesday. This trough will
possibly produce isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior,
particularly near the southern border.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
