Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 29/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A strong wind warning has been issued for southeast Gulf of
Carpentaria waters for Tuesday morning.

Weather Situation
A surface trough lies over the Queensland interior. A high [1027 hPa] moving
east over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge over western Queensland.
An upper level trough over South Australia is expected to move into western
Queensland late today and move east into southeast Queensland by late Tuesday.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms east of a line extending from Richmond to
Goodooga but remaining fine for eastern parts of the Wide Bay district, eastern
Darling Downs and Granite Belt and the southeast district. Isolated showers or
thunderstorms over the northeast tropics. Fine in the west with a very high fire
danger for the Northwest district. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the
eastern half of the state with moderate SW to SE winds in the west.
Forecast for Tuesday
Patchy rain areas will tend to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms
east of a line from about Georgetown to Mungindi. Only isolated showers are
expected over the northeast tropics. Fine and warm in the west of the state with
a very high fire danger expected in the Northwest and Central West districts.
Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the eastern half of the state. Moderate SW
to SE winds in the west, fresh and gusty at times about the northwest of the
state in the morning with strong winds in the southern Gulf early in the
day.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough will move off the southern Queensland coast during the early
morning with lingering showers and thunderstorms clearing. The high over
southeastern Australia will extend a ridge into eastern Queensland with isolated
showers along the east coast, tending scattered about the north tropical coast.
Fine elsewhere in the state under a stable air mass. A warm day in the west.
Freshening SE winds along the coast, reaching strong north of Cairns during the
evening.
Forecast for Thursday
The high near Tasmania will strengthen and maintain the ridge along the east
Queensland coast. Isolated showers will continue about east coastal districts,
tending scattered about the north tropical coast in the morning. Remaining fine
and warm in the west. Fresh to strong SE winds along the tropical coast, lighter
winds along the southern coast.
Forecast for Friday
The high moves east into the Tasman Sea with a strengthening ridge along the
east Queensland coast. Isolated showers will continue about the east coastal
districts and push slightly further inland. Another upper level trough is likely
in increase shower activity about the far southeast of the state with scattered
showers about the southeast coast. Fresh to strong SE winds about the tropical
coast. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The high is expected to move slowly east over the Tasman Sea during the
outlook period. The high will continue to extend a ridge over eastern Queensland
with isolated showers about the coast, extending further inland into the eastern
interior during the outlook period. Remaining fine elsewhere. Temperatures
remaining generally above average over the interior.
