Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Aug 24/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between
Bowen and Point Danger, excluding Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay.

Weather Situation
A surface trough lies over the western Coral Sea and will approach the
central Queensland coast today before weakening late this evening. A weakening
high [1030 hPa] lies near New Zealand and extends a ridge across southeastern
Australia and the east Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated showers along the exposed southern coast and the northeast tropical
coast. Areas of cloud over the remaining east coast and adjacent inland south of
about Bowen though remaining mostly fine with only isolated light showers. Fine
across the remainder of the state. A warm day in western districts. Moderate to
fresh S to SE winds along the southern and central Queensland coast. Moderate E
to SE winds elsewhere. A very high fire danger in the Central Highlands and
Coalfields forecast district.
Forecast for Friday
The high is expected to be situated to the east of the North Island of New
Zealand and extend a weak ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface
trough will begin to develop across western Queensland as a new high moves into
the Great Australian Bight. Showers will increase along the central, Capricorn
and Fraser coasts in response to a  mid level trough. This trough will also
spread moisture further west, with isolated afternoon showers developing through
parts of the central and southern interior. Mostly fine conditions are expected
in the far southeast with cloud increasing and isolated light showers developing
during the day. Isolated showers and morning drizzle areas will occur over the
tropical east coast and adjacent inland. Conditions will remain fine in the far
west. Daytime temperatures will be above average over much of the state,
particularly over the west and southern interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The new surface trough is expected to move east over the Queensland interior
into eastern districts. An accompanying upper trough will increase cloud with
rain areas and isolated thunderstorms extending over southern and central areas
of the state near and to the east of the trough. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will also occur in the moist, unstable airmass to the east of the
trough over the southern tropics. Isolated showers and drizzle areas will occur
over the northeast tropics. Conditions will remain fine in the west in the dry
S'ly wind flow west of the surface trough. Above average temperatures will again
occur over the west of the state.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough will most likely move off the east Queensland coast during
the morning, clearing the rain band east off the central and southern coast
early. However, isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely to persist over
central and southeast districts due to a lingering unstable airmass east of a
weak surface trough over the southern interior. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms will also occur through the eastern tropical interior and southern
tropical and central coasts in a moist, unstable airmass. Isolated showers will
continue over the northeast tropical coast.  Conditions will remain fine and
warm over most of western Queensland.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A new high is expected to move east over southeastern Australia during the
outlook period, extending a ridge and mostly fine conditions across Queensland.
An upper trough moving over eastern Queensland on Tuesday may increase showers
again over central and southeast districts, with the possibility of isolated
afternoon thunderstorms, before clearing off the coast overnight. Otherwise,
isolated showers will continue along the northeast tropical coast in an onshore
wind flow. Temperatures remaining above average over the interior.

Thursday.
