Weather Situation
A trough over the Coral Sea is moving slowly west towards the southern and
central Queensland coast. A large high [1037 hPa] in the Tasman Sea extends a
firm ridge across central and southeastern Australia. An upper low is situated
near the central Queensland coast and is expected to move offshore into the
Coral Sea during Wednesday.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over southeast districts east of
the Great Dividing Range. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms
elsewhere over eastern parts of the state south of Bowen. Isolated showers along
the tropical east coast. Fine elsewhere. Dangerous surf conditions Fraser Island
and south. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds along much of the east Queensland
coast. Moderate SE winds elsewhere. A very high fire danger in the Northwest,
Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Central
Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders
and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands districts.
Forecast for Wednesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the east coast and adjacent
inland south of about St. Lawrence. Isolated showers over the central coast,
also developing through the eastern interior during the afternoon. Fine across
the remainder of the state apart from the chance of isolated showers along the
northeast tropical coast. Warm daytime temperatures over the southern interior.
Dangerous surf conditions Fraser Island and south, though conditions will start
to ease at night. Fresh to strong SE winds along much of the Queensland coast
with moderate SE winds elsewhere. A very high fire danger in the Darling Downs
and Granite Belt, Maranoa and Warrego, Central West and Central Highlands and
Coalfields forecast districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The surface trough will most likely weaken near the southeast Queensland
coast while the upper low contracts further offshore. The high will continue
weakening as it moves east over the North Island of New Zealand. Showers could
still be enhanced at least in the morning along the southern Queensland coast in
the vicinity of the surface trough. Isolated showers will occur elsewhere along
the east Queensland coast south of Bowen, developing about the eastern interior
during the afternoon. Fine conditions will occur across the remainder of the
state apart from the chance of isolated showers along the northeast Queensland
coast. Warm daytime temperatures will occur across the southern interior.
Forecast for Friday
The high is expected to be situated to the east of the North Island of New
Zealand and extend a weak ridge along the east Queensland coast. Another trough
will begin to develop across western Queensland as a new high moves into the
Great Australian Bight. Isolated showers will occur along the east Queensland
coast, chiefly north of Fraser Island. Isolated showers will also occur through
the southern and central interior ahead of the new trough, chiefly during the
afternoon. Fine conditions will continue in the west. Daytime temperatures will
be above average over much of the state, particularly over the southern
interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The new trough is expected to move east over the Queensland interior into
eastern districts. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will most likely occur
near and to the east of the trough over central and southern Queensland.
Isolated showers will also occur over the northeast tropics in a moist, unstable
airmass. Fine conditions are expected in the west in the dry S'ly wind flow
behind the surface trough. Above average temperatures will again occur over much
of the state.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The trough and associated shower and thunderstorm activity will most likely
contract off the east Queensland coast during Sunday. The new high will then
move east over southeastern Australia during the outlook period, extending a
ridge and mostly fine conditions across Queensland in the wake of the trough.
Isolated showers will continue on the northeast tropical coast in an onshore
wind flow.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
