Weather Situation
An upper level low over the Capricornia district is moving north towards the
central Queensland coast. A low [1019 hPa] over the southern Coral Sea is
expected to move northwestwards over the next 24 hours and weaken into a trough.
A large high [1040 hPa] centred to the east of Tasmania is moving east in the
Tasman Sea and is expected to strengthen during the next 24 hours before
beginning to weaken on Tuesday.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms along the Wide Bay and Southeast
coasts. Isolated showers and possible afternoon thunderstorms over the central
and southeast interior. Very isolated showers developing about the northern
tropical coast. Fine conditions elsewhere. Gale S to SE winds south of Fraser
Island while strong S to SE winds likely for most of the remainder of the
eastern Queensland coastal waters. A very high fire danger about the Central
West district.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper low remains almost stationary near the central Queensland coast
with unsettled conditions continuing about central and southeast districts with
strong coastal winds, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Very
isolated showers remaining eastern Queensland coast. A surface trough will
deepen in the Coral Sea and move west towards the Queensland coast. Isolated
showers elsewhere along the east coast, while the strong high in the Tasman Sea
maintains a ridge across the rest of the state with fine conditions prevailing.
Dangerous surf conditions developing Fraser Island and south.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper low should start to move slowly southeastwards off the central
coast but will maintain unsettled conditions about the central and southeast
districts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely to continue
about the central coast and parts of the southeast of the state but there is
considerable uncertainty in the exact location of the upper low and surface
trough. Strong coastal winds will persist about the central and southern coast.
Fine conditions elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper low and trough system should continue to move east off the
Queensland coast with an easing in shower activity. The tropical coast area
should be mostly fine with only isolated showers about the North Tropical Coast.
The remainder of the state should remain fine. Strong winds will finally ease
about the east coast.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The upper low should move slowly south or east and weaken further. However,
showers are likely to continue about the east coast and adjacent inland areas in
the moist onshore flow. The next upper trough and surface trough are likely to
enter the southwest of the state over the weekend but their impact on the
weather remains uncertain at this stage.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
