Weather Situation
An upper level trough is moving north over northern New South Wales. A low
[1011 hPa] over the Tasman Sea is expected to move northwards during the weekend
and extend a surface trough over southeast Queensland. A broad high [1033 hPa]
centred near Tasmania is moving into the southern Tasman Sea and expected to
strengthen during the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Isolated showers over the far southeast of the state, mainly about the
southern border ranges. Fine elsewhere. Early morning frost areas over the
central and southeast interior, and also possible on the higher ground in the
tropics. Light to moderate S to SE winds, fresh at times over the northwest and
north tropical coast. Fresh to strong S to SE winds developing along the far
southern coast in the afternoon and evening.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough is expected to cut off into an upper low over the Wide Bay
and Burnett and move slowly north. The surface trough will move north along the
southern Queensland coast, with increasing showers and possible isolated
thunderstorms in the southeast, extending into the Wide Bay and Burnett during
the day. More isolated showers and thunderstorms will extend inland into the
southern and southeastern interior during the afternoon. The high over the
southern Tasman Sea will maintain the ridge and fine conditions elsewhere over
the state. Fresh to strong S to SE winds along the southern Queensland coast.
Early morning frost areas over the central interior.
Forecast for Monday
The upper low moves slowly north towards the central Queensland coast. The
surface trough continues to move north towards southern tropical waters
increasing shower activity about the eastern Queensland coast with isolated
thunderstorms likely as well. Isolated showers and possible afternoon
thunderstorms over the central and southeast interior. The high in the southern
Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge over the rest of Queensland with fine
conditions prevailing. Strong S to SE winds are likely for the central and
southern Queensland coasts.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper low remains almost stationary near the central Queensland coast
with unsettled conditions continuing about central and southeast districts with
strong coastal winds, widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms. Isolated
showers elsewhere along the east coast, while the strong high in the Tasman Sea
maintains a ridge across the rest of the state with fine conditions
prevailing.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The upper low will remain almost stationary before moving slowly south or
east and weakening late in the week. Continued unsettled conditions will result
in showers and isolated thunderstorms about the central and southern Queensland
coast and adjacent inland areas. Isolated showers elsewhere along the eastern
Queensland coast. The high over the southern Tasman Sea will begin to weaken but
still extend a ridge across the rest of the state with fine conditions
prevailing.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
