MELBOURNE - Aug 19/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeast Gulf Waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation An upper level trough will move over northern New South Wales as a surface trough off the New South Wales coast moves north entering far southern waters late on Saturday. A high over South Australia extends a ridge into western Queensland. The high will strengthen over the weekend as it moves into the southern Tasman Sea. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated afternoon showers over far southern parts of the state, with possible isolated thunderstorms, particularly near the southern border. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresher about the northern coasts. Forecast for Saturday Isolated showers are expected in the unstable airmass in the far south near the New South Wales border. Strong S to SE winds developing in far southern waters late in the afternoon and evening. Early frost areas are again expected over the central and southeast interior, and will also possibly occur on higher ground in the tropics. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough is expected to cutoff into an upper low about Wide Bay and Burnett and slowly move north. The surface trough will move north along the southern Queensland coast, with increasing showers and possible isolated thunderstorms in the southeast, extending into Wide Bay during the day. Showers and thunderstorms will extend inland to southern and southeastern interior during the afternoon. The high over the southern Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge and fine conditions elsewhere over the state. Strong winds are expected south of Sandy Cape. Early frost areas will occur over the central and southeast interior. Forecast for Monday The upper low moves slowly north towards the central Queensland coast. The surface trough continue to move north towards the southern tropical waters increasing shower activity along the eastern Queensland coast with isolated thunderstorms likely in the afternoon. The high in the southern Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge over the rest of Queensland with fine conditions prevailing. Strong winds are likely for central and southern coasts. Forecast for Tuesday The upper low remains almost stationary continuing unsettled weather along much of the southern east coast with strong winds, showers and isolated thunderstorms. Isolated showers elsewhere along the east coast, while the strong high in the Tasman Sea maintains a ridge across most of the state with fine conditions prevailing. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The upper low will remain almost stationary before moving slowly southwest and weakening late in the week. Continued unsettled conditions will result in showers and isolated thunderstorms along the southern Queensland coast and adjacent inland areas. Isolated showers elsewhere along the eastern Queensland coast. The high over the southern Tasman Sea will begin to weaken but still extend a ridge across most of the state with fine conditions prevailing.
