MELBOURNE - Aug 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeast Gulf
Waters.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
An upper level trough will move over New South Wales into far southern
Queensland as a surface low develops off the New South Wales coast. A high over
South Australia extends a ridge into western Queensland. The high will
strengthen over the weekend as it moves into the southern Tasman Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated afternoon showers over far southern parts of the state, with
possible isolated thunderstorms, particularly near the southern border. Fine
elsewhere. Early frost areas about the central and southeastern interior. Light
to moderate SW to SE winds, fresher about the northern coasts.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface low is expected to remain slow moving over the northern Tasman
Sea, while the upper trough will persist over northeastern New South Wales.
Isolated showers are expected in the unstable airmass in the far south. A ridge
of high pressure will dominate weather elsewhere across the state with fine
conditions continuing. Early frost areas are again expected over the central and
southeast interior, and will also possibly occur on higher ground in the
tropics.
Forecast for Sunday
The low will most likely remain slow moving over the northern Tasman Sea. The
upper trough is expected to move north along the southern coast towards Fraser
Island. A series of surface troughs move north along the southern Queensland
coast, with scattered showers in the southeast and possible inland afternoon
thunderstorms. Showers tending isolated about the Wide Bay and Capricornia
coasts. The high over the southern Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge and fine
conditions elsewhere over the state. Strong winds are expected for the Southeast
Coast from the afternoon. Early frost areas will occur over the central and
southeast interior.
Forecast for Monday
The low over the northern Tasman Sea will weaken as the upper trough moves
slowly north towards the central Queensland coast. The surface troughs continue
to move north towards the southern tropical waters increasing shower activity
along the eastern Queensland coast with thunderstorms likely in the afternoon.
The high in the southern Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge over the rest of
Queensland with fine conditions prevailing. Strong winds are likely for central
and southern coasts.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The upper trough will most likely move offshore of the Capricornia coast and
cut off into an upper low. The high over the southern Tasman Sea will weaken as
a new high forms over southern New South Wales. This new high will extend a
ridge across most of the state with strong SE winds. Isolated to scattered
showers along much of the east Queensland coast, particularly in the southeast.
Fine conditions expected to continue in the west.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
