MELBOURNE - Aug 18/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for Southeast Gulf Waters. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A trough is moving off the east coast of Queensland. An upper level trough will move over New South Wales into far southern Queensland on Friday as a low develops off the New South Wales coast. A high over South Australia extends a ridge into western Queensland. The high over South Australia will weaken on Friday as a new high builds over the southern Tasman Sea. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Fine throughout the state apart from possible isolated showers about the Granite Belt and far southern Darling Downs. Moderate to fresh SW winds in the south. Mostly moderate S to SE winds in the north with coastal afternoon sea breezes. A very high fire danger over the Central West, Central Highlands and Coalfields and Southeast Coast districts. Forecast for Friday Isolated afternoon showers are expected over far southern parts of the state, with possible isolated thunderstorms, particularly near the southern border. Fine elsewhere. Early frost areas are likely over the central and southeastern interior. Strong S'ly winds will extend over southeast Gulf waters during the morning. Forecast for Saturday The low is expected to remain slow moving over the northern Tasman Sea, while the upper trough will persist over northeastern New South Wales. Isolated showers are expected in the unstable airmass in the far south, with possible isolated thunderstorms about the southern border ranges. A ridge of high pressure will dominate weather elsewhere across the state with fine conditions continuing. Early frost areas are again expected over the central and southeast interior, and will also possibly occur on higher ground in the tropics. Forecast for Sunday The low will most likely remain slow moving over the northern Tasman Sea. The upper trough is expected to move north along the southern coast towards Fraser Island. A series of surface troughs move north along the southern Queensland coast, with scattered showers in the southeast and possible inland afternoon thunderstorms. Showers tending isolated about the Wide Bay and Capricornia coasts. The high over the southern Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge and fine conditions elsewhere over the state. A strong wind warning is expected for the Southeast Coast from the afternoon. Early frost areas will occur over the central and southeast interior. Forecast for Monday The low over the northern Tasman Sea will weaken as the upper trough moves slowly north towards the central Queensland coast. The surface troughs continue to move north towards the southern tropical waters increasing shower activity along the eastern Queensland coast. The high in the southern Tasman Sea will maintain a ridge over the rest of Queensland with fine conditions prevailing. A strong wind warning is possible south of the surface trough. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The upper trough will most likely move offshore of the Capricornia coast and cut off into an upper low. The high over the southern Tasman Sea will weaken as a new high forms over southern New South Wales. This new high will extend a ridge across most of the state with strong SE winds and isolated showers along much of the eastern Queensland coast, particularly in the southeast, and fine conditions in the interior.
