MELBOURNE - Aug 5/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1030 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge over the east coast of Queensland. The high is expected to move slowly east and weaken over the next couple of days. A trough is expected to move across southwest Queensland late today and during Saturday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers and drizzle about eastern districts, tending to scattered showers about the north tropical and central coast. Isolated showers over the eastern interior. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the tropical east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, tending moderate NE to NW over the southwest. Forecast for Saturday Isolated showers and drizzle about eastern districts, tending to scattered showers about the north tropical coast. Isolated showers over the eastern and central interior. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the southwest spreading into the southern interior during the day. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the tropical east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, tending moderate NE to NW over the interior ahead of a S to SW change. Forecast for Sunday A weak ridge is expected to persist over the north tropical coast. The surface trough should move further eastwards over the central and southeast interior of the state during the day as an upper level trough moves over New South Wales. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to accompany the trough as it moves across southern Queensland, particularly about the southern border areas. Isolated showers over the remainder of eastern and central Queensland ahead of the surface trough. Fine west of about Longreach, with cooler conditions in the Channel Country. Forecast for Monday The surface trough is expected to move off the southern and central Queensland coast in the morning as a low deepens near the southern New South Wales coast. Dry and cooler southwest winds spreading across the interior. Isolated showers clearing early in the morning about the southeast and north tropical coast. Isolated showers are possible about the far southern interior with lingering instability. Possible early morning frosts about parts of the southeast and central interior. Forecast for Tuesday The low off the southern New South Wales coast is expected to move south as a ridge extends across most of the Queensland interior. Cool and dry SW winds across most of the state with fine conditions expected. Early morning frosts about the central, southern and southeast inland areas. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Another upper trough system is expected to move across southeast Australia with an area of low pressure developing over New South Wales. This system may affect southern Queensland late in the week, with isolated showers possible, but conditions are expected to remain predominantly fine at this stage. Otherwise, cool and dry S to SW winds are expected across the remainder of the state with early morning frosts about the central, southern and southeast inland areas.
