MELBOURNE - Aug 3/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from the Torres Strait to Cairns. A strong wind warning has been issued for coastal waters from Cairns to Bowen. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A stationary high [1028 hPa] lies over the Tasman Sea, and another high [1028 hPa] lies over southeast Queensland. A ridge extends up the east coast of Queensland. The high over the Tasman Sea is expected to strengthen slightly during Thursday. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Fine throughout the state except for some isolated showers along the east coast north of Fraser Island, extending into the nearby inland areas about the northeast of the state. Light to moderate NE to NW winds about the western districts. Light to moderate E to SE winds about the eastern districts, fresh at times along the northeast coast. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to strengthen slightly over the central Tasman Sea, reinforcing the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Onshore winds should again produce isolated showers along the east coast north of Fraser Island, spreading to nearby inland areas during the afternoon. Conditions will remain fine elsewhere, with isolated early morning frosts over the southeast interior. Daytime temperatures will remain above average in the west and through the southern interior. Light to moderate E to SE winds about the eastern districts, fresh at times along the northeast coast. Forecast for Friday The high is expected to drift slowly east over the Tasman Sea and start to weaken, gradually relaxing the ridge along the east coast. Isolated showers are expected along the east coast north of Fraser Island in the onshore wind flow, tending scattered along the northeast tropical coast. Remaining fine elsewhere, except for just the chance of some isolated, light afternoon showers over the eastern interior and southeast districts. Just the chance of some light morning frost over the Granite Belt. Forecast for Saturday The high will drift further east over the Tasman Sea, with the ridge relaxing further. A surface trough is expected to move slowly eastwards across the Channel Country, producing isolated showers and possible afternoon thunderstorms over the southwest of the state. Moist E to NE winds ahead of the trough will result in isolated showers over eastern and central parts of the state, tending scattered along the northeast tropical coast. Remaining mainly fine over the southeast, with just the chance of some isolated showers. Forecast for Sunday The surface trough should move further eastwards during Sunday, producing isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over Queensland's southern interior and southeast. Isolated showers continuing about the remaining eastern districts and the Central Highlands. Fine over the western districts, with cooler conditions about the Channel Country. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Showers should gradually contract off the southeast coast early in the new week as the trough moves offshore. Showers should also ease over the remainder of the east coast, and clear over the eastern interior. So fine over the majority of the state, though cooler due to dry southeast to southwest winds.
