MELBOURNE - Jul 31/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown. A strong wind warning has been issued for coastal waters from Cooktown to Cairns for Monday afternoon. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1025 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge over the east coast of Queensland. The high is expected to drift slowly southeast towards New Zealand over the next few days, gradually relaxing the ridge. A trough will deepen over the far southeastern Coral Sea late on Monday, tightening the pressure gradient temporarily and extending strong SE winds south over the east tropical coast to Cairns. Forecast for the rest of Monday Fine across the state apart from early morning fog patches over eastern parts south of Cairns and isolated light showers along the northeast tropical coast. Early morning frosts over the central and southeast interior. A warm day over western districts with light to moderate NE to NW winds. Light and variable winds in the southeast. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere, strong at times along the coast north of Cairns. Forecast for Tuesday The high will become slow moving near New Zealand, while the deepening trough over the southeastern Coral Sea will shift further southeast. The pressure gradient along the northeast tropical coast will relax as a result, with winds easing below strong in the afternoon. Isolated showers will continue about the east tropical coast. Fine conditions will persist elsewhere apart from early morning fog patches over eastern parts south of Cairns. Early morning frost areas will again occur about the central and southeast interior and western parts of the Southeast Coast district. Warm daytime temperatures will continue in the west and through the southern interior. Forecast for Wednesday The high will remain slow moving near New Zealand. Isolated showers will continue in the onshore wind flow along the northeast tropical coast, possibly becoming scattered between Cairns and Townsville as moisture increases. Conditions will remain fine elsewhere apart from early morning fogs in the southeast. Early morning frosts will again occur over the central and southeast interior. Daytime temperatures will be above the August average in the west and through the southern interior. Forecast for Thursday A new high will develop over the Tasman Sea, reinforcing the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Isolated showers will occur along the east coast north of Yeppoon in the onshore wind flow, more frequent along the northeast tropical coast. Conditions will remain fine elsewhere, with isolated early morning frosts over the southeast interior. Daytime temperatures will remain above average in the west and through the southern interior. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The new high will most likely strengthen over the Tasman Sea, extending a freshening E to SE wind flow along the east Queensland coast. Isolated to scattered showers will continue about the east tropical coast and will also develop over the southern coast and the eastern interior as moisture builds. A trough system will most likely approach southwestern Queensland late in the week, though its movement and subsequent impact on weather over the southern interior of Queensland is still uncertain at this stage. The risk of early morning frosts significantly decreases over the southeastern interior as cloud cover increases. Daytime temperatures will likely remain above average over the west and through the southern interior until at least Sunday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
