MELBOURNE - Jul 29/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cairns. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1026 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge over the east coast of Queensland. The high is expected to drift slowly southeast over the next few days and gradually weaken. A trough system over South Australia is expected to approach far southwestern Queensland late today. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Isolated showers along the east coast and adjacent inland. Very isolated light showers over the eastern Darling Downs and the Burnett district in the afternoon. Fine over the rest of the state, a warm day in the southwest. Patchy early morning frost areas about the central and southeast interior. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state, tending fresh to strong about the northeast coast. Forecast for Sunday The high is expected to move very slowly southeast over the eastern Tasman Sea which will allow the onshore winds along the east coast of Queensland to gradually ease. It should remain fine over most of the state with only isolated showers about the east coast. The trough system is expected to move over southwest Queensland and weaken, with a very warm day expected in this region. Strong SE winds are expected to continue about the east coast north of Cooktown. Early morning frost areas about the central and southeast interior. Forecast for Monday The high should remain over the eastern Tasman Sea and will maintain a ridge along the Queensland coast. Most of the state will again be fine with only isolated showers expected about the tropical east coast. Strong SE winds are expected to continue about the east coast north of Cooktown. Early morning frost areas are again expected about the central and southeast interior. A very warm day in the southwest and southern interior. Forecast for Tuesday The high over the eastern Tasman Sea should continue to extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast. Isolated showers will continue about the tropical east coast with the remainder of the state remaining fine. The strong SE winds about the northeast tropical coast should finally ease. Early morning frost areas are again expected about the central and southeast interior. A very warm day in the southwest and southern interior. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The high is forecast to move near to or over New Zealand with a ridge extending along the east Queensland coast throughout the outlook period. This should continue to produce a weak onshore flow and generally isolated showers about the northeast tropics. Fine conditions should continue inland, though a new trough system may affect the southwest on Friday but with no significant precipitation expected at this stage. Early morning frost areas are likely to continue about the central and southeast interior. Maximum temperatures remaining well above average in the southwest and southern interior.
