MELBOURNE - Jul 23/11 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current from Sandy Cape to Point Danger, excluding Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high south of Tasmania extends a ridge into western and northern Queensland. The high will weaken and drift southeast during the rest of the weekend. A low pressure system lies to the northwest of New Zealand and will continue to rapidly move to the southeast. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Fine across the state. Light to moderate S to SE winds. Strong southerly winds over southern offshore waters. A 3 to 4 metre S'ly swell will extend from the south over offshore southern waters with dangerous beach and surf conditions about some of the southeast coast beaches. Forecast for Sunday Winds will rapidly ease over the southeast of the state. Fine conditions will persist about most of the state under the influence of the ridge, though isolated showers are possible about Fraser Island and along the southern border ranges. Isolated showers are expected to develop along the east tropical coast north of Townsville in the evening as the onshore increases. Extensive early frost will occur in the cool and clear conditions over the interior and also over higher ground in the tropics. Forecast for Monday The high in the Tasman Sea, together with a new high over the Great Australian Bight, will maintain a ridge of high pressure over Queensland. Moisture will increase over the eastern tropics and the onshore wind flow will produce isolated showers on the east tropical coast. Fine conditions will occur elsewhere. Extensive early frost is expected over the southern and central interior. Forecast for Tuesday The new high will move east over southeastern Australia, maintaining a firm ridge over Queensland. Showers will increase over the east tropical coast between Cairns and Townsville due to a freshening onshore wind flow and an approaching upper level trough. Isolated showers will occur elsewhere along the east tropical coast and adjacent inland, and also move onto the Central coast. Fine conditions are expected elsewhere under a stable airmass. Areas of early morning frost are still expected in the southern and central interior. Forecast for Wednesday The high will slightly intensify over New South Wales, maintaining a firm ridge up the Queensland coast. Fresh to strong winds may develop about the Peninsula Waters and North Tropical Coast. Isolated showers will continue about the east tropical coast. Fine elsewhere in the state. Areas of early morning frost are still expected in the southern and central interior Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The new high will move east into the Tasman Sea during the outlook period, extending fresh to strong SE winds along much of the east Queensland coast. Mid level cloud will most likely increase over northern Queensland on Friday due to a weak upper trough, enhancing showers further on the northeast tropical coast and producing isolated showers over the northern interior. Conditions should remain fine elsewhere over the interior, with early frost continuing over southern and central parts. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday.
